Feedback: The Absolute State of Death Knight

Death Knight has a lot of core problems that plague the spec in both comp making and gameplay. Being one of the only classes left in the game without a true raid buff makes us generally less desirable to take, our old animations make us less desirable to play, and our weird, out-of-date class and spec trees are fundamentally flawed. I could pine on and on about how Death Knight needs a full rework, but it seems we will not be getting that as they modify paladin and shaman abilities for the hundredth time this week (remove festering wounds). Instead, here are a list of simple requests so the spec can function while an EXPECTED total rework is worked on.

  • Give us a raid buff, grips are not a raid buff. Anyone who knows anything about the game would tell you that grips are not a raid buff and they would never trade their raid buff for grips.
  • Fix pet ai or give us greater control. Abom sometimes just stands there and attacks nothing, riders attack packs you haven’t attacked. This is pretty unacceptable when its a major portion of unholy’s damage.
  • Equalize utility between blood and dps. Blood has better grips, a better AMZ, and its generally a more attractive option when you need a Death Knight for the shoehorned in grip fight of the raid.
  • Fix unholy’s crit scaling, its near non-functional since the introduction of perma-crit sudden doom.
  • Fix the unacceptable amount of variance that frost has, their damage should not be entirely luck based.

These are band-aids at best and would make the class function in a competitive setting. Fix our bad tunning and bad utility and then move towards the full rework that gives us back our identity. Please make noise about these problems, advocate for yourselves. Thank you.

Couple all of this with the multiple bugs that have existed since beta for DK (Incite Terror only benefits 1 DK to start) and it’s surprising something hasn’t been done sooner. I know for certain things have been lamented multiple times by players, and this just compounds the fact we (DK’s) feel largely ignored. Aura buffs and tier buffs may be necessary to keep our damage competitive, but without some kind of raid buff we’re largely irrelevant, especially if we aren’t topping meters.

Be honest, the devs are actively hostile to death knight being relevant at this point.

Frost was one of the few specs that got pre-RWF-completion nerfs last season. You see that happening to Rogue or Mage rn? Of course not, because those are the darling classes.

On top of being poo poo ca ca “tied to PI” tier in Dragonflight.

raid buff and grip parity between dps dk and bdk is really needed at this point.

They are though. Many people see grips as a means for the DK to hit something. You see it all the time, but its a powerful grouping tool that can and does significantly increase the damage of the group. While they arent “press button and give everyone 5% increase to primary stat”, it is very powerful.

Didnt mage just last RWF get some kind of fix? Everyone was wondering why I think it was Flaredup’s damage just went through the roof. It was either fixed or disabled not long after, had to do with a hero spec interaction.

In this specific tier, there are very few fights with mobs that can be gripped. This mean for the fights without grippable adds, and single target fights the DK is only bringing damage. If the damage is subpar and the “raid buff” (its not) is useless, there is zero reason to bring a DPS DK when everything else they do a BDK will do better.

And AMS, and some other debuffs. DK might need a slight buff, but RWF is going on.

It also depends on the fight with what you want to bring.

But for the vast majority of people, bringing a DK isnt going to ruin a kill or raid night or M+ runs or anything else really. RWF is its own beast.

Did I stutter? It seems like its only the Dk forums that severely underestimate the DK kit. Death Grip acts as a raid / group buff by allowing damage to hit all targets effectively, that is a buff to group damage. Is it always able to be utilized? No. But that doesnt change the fact of what it is.

With that logic, you might as well call Ring of Peace a Raid / Group Buff.

Or Sigil of Chains.

Or Ursol’s Vortex.

See what’s wrong with your statement? Because when we mean Raid Buffs… we mean something like Battle Shout or Arcane Intellect.

If you are talking about abilities that allowing to hit all targets effectively, Death Grip is not the only ability that does this. You also have:

  • Gorefiend’s Grasp
  • Sigil of Chains
  • Ursol’s Vortex
  • Ring of Peace (if used to displace rather than scatter)
  • Champion’s Spear

… and you’re saying they’re Raid Buffs like…

  • Arcane Intellect
  • Battle Shout
  • Healthstones
  • Chaos Brand
  • Mystic Touch
  • Devotion Aura

Like, Death Grip is obviously not a buff that makes the group stronger. But if you say that it acts like it… so do the 5 abilities at the top.

Ursol’s vortex cant pull something outside of a group to a group. Dont know why you are lumping that in. Ring of peace can be used in that way, but its a much longer DC.
