We shouldn’t even have cleaving strikes. They shoulda buffed frost scythe for that role.
Because a slow class shouldnt rely on standing still in a small circle for all of their throughput and spec tuning to actually mean anything?
Because people play the spec in PvP, and when its horrible Mythic Plus design seeps through into that area of the game you can easily see how braindead and flawed the design of the spec is, Considering its made for fighting scripted and dumb NPCs who do the same thing over and over, Rather than intelligent players who dont stand in AoE circles mindlessly above 1600 rating
I don’t like this hero tree, at all. I’m not trying whine about it either. It seems very rng and I don’t like how the capstone is triggered by frostwyrm’s fury. I’d prefer it be its own button.

You’re not the only one. A lot of people are still on the honeymoon phase of the hero talents because they get a “pony” to ride outdoors or for a few seconds. It’ll take time for them to realize that it’s not a pony but a donkey, and it’s pooping everywhere.
After thinking about this tree some more, even ignoring any class & spec changes that are coming later, this tree is much worse than I originally thought and possibly the worst of the three.
The current San’layn, while not ideal, at least has a gameplay loop to keep the buff up, so while it’s already problematic that every DK spec’s damage is loaded into CDs, at least San’layn distributes some damage out of that.
Rider is just… horrible all around. Press major CD > get big damage boost is the most basic purpose of a major CD and that’s all Rider contributes: just extra damage during the CD window which DKs don’t need more of. Everything else is just entirely meh at best and detrimental at worst. The only partly redeeming aspect, other than Apocalypse Now, is Whiteman’s DoT.
At this point I’d rather the starting node just be “You may select a horseman to assist you during combat”, the choice node changed to some version of getting the current starting node, and the 4 specific Horseman “boost” talents just replaced with “You get X% of Y secondary for each horseman active”. At least then it wouldn’t just be a tree that puts more power into CDs and could actually spread out the damage. Maybe the class & spec tree changes will make this tree not look like just another X% damage during your CD windows but I doubt it.
And the theme was cool on first reveal but this tree is more aptly described as “Herald of the Apocalypse” since the only rider aspect is the charger node. An incredibly disappointing tree, even if damage is ripped from the CD windows and redistributed to the base specs.
At least Deathbringer hits the mark.
Plenty of other classes hit as many targets simultaneously for as hard as one does with Cleaving Strikes.
To do so, they might instead enhance their skills directly for comparable AoE damage within a given window of opportunity rather than spread their ST ability (which often means that the same window can also be useful for ST, rather than a wasted mechanic therein), but it still produces the same result: burst AoE.
Cleaving Strikes from DnD simply happens to be one of the clunkiest and least PvP-capable ways to provide said AoE.
Hands down, while I think Death and Decay is cool in theory, it just does not play will from a game design perspective. Everything I can do any other class can do 10x better, especially Ret Paladins holy crap their AoE is easy.
Putting this here to for visibility: Blue, PLEASE for the love of all that is good, please give DK’s a Deathbringer mount similar to the 4 Horseman mounts to go with this spec or heck just in general. The only ones that we can obtain currently are if you PvP a ton for a vicious saddle or a super rare Midnight drop from Kara (which is all red and does not fit DK theme a bunch). Please give us a mount that is befitting of this spec instead of the Acherus Deathcharger which is a old and outdated model.
Both the player and the summoned Riders already uses a version of Mawsworn horse mount. Not saying that there shouldn’t be customization options available but it’s already doing what you’re ask for.
The Mawsworn house mounts are ghost type ones aren they? The Deathcharger/4 horseman ones are skeleton horses with more armor on them and look way better imo, the Mawsworn are runner up for sure but even so with the Deathbringer hero talent, it force you to use the Archerus Charger which is a old LoTK low rez mount
I really want to ride my Kodo into battle. Doubt they are going to let us use any mount?

You’ve severely missed the mark. The class needs to be reworked and streamlined at this point.

Nobody ever picks anything apart from Fallen Crusader.
Fallen Crusader will always be the go to pick unless they change the enchants from being primary stat procs like Sophic Devotion. Its a free enchant, its not really meant to be anything other than that for the most part.
The problem is that there will always be a “best”… If it 's not Fallen Crusader then it will be something else. There is no such thing as a real “choice” if you’re trying to play the meta
The problem is if you don’t play meta, you usually don’t get groups. I’ve seen groups going perfectly in mythic, but the moment you take a bit longer than expected someone says you aren’t playing X build right or we’re not making time and they just bounce, even with 0 death runs. If you build pve with race mechanics, you’ll be expected to play the only viable race builds and nothing else.
As many have stated before, the theme is top tier. The charger in combat/death’s advance charger is amazing. (Can we please get an updated charger? Including a red one for those who did the shadowmourne quest?)
But besides those things, this feels so bland. It has just about 0 interaction. The other DK hero specs look so much more promising from a fun standpoint in terms of adding new things. This one is sort of just yay more pets for more damage.
As a pvper, I am happy regardless, but would like more interaction.
Tired of bad pet play mechanics, Long army cooldown, pet with terrible pathing AI that I need to use to make chains thru mobs. Whoever designs these things for our class is sadistic. Why add more RNG pets into the mix, when the current ones are part of the problem?
I’m sure it’s been mentioned, but large races such as Trolls look horrendous on the horse. Please let my Zandalari choose a mount or fix the scaling.
I also think AMS (among many things) needs an updated visual. The random horseman constantly get summoned and enter the battle with AMS. It’s a complete eye sore, imo.
Thematically this spec looks good. Mechanically it’s bad.
- Riders Champion: More RNG mechanics, here’s what happens. AoE situation is coming up and guess who shows up randomly!?! It’s not Mograine and his Death and Decay that’s for sure 75% of the time.
Solution: Riders Champion is now an active ability NOT on the GCD, and when activated makes four of your abilities summon a specified Horseman. Cast Death and Decay? Mograine arrives. Chains of Ice, Trollbane etc. Let the player decide based on the situation at the time.
- On A Paler Horse: Great for leveling and outdoor gameplay, apparently does not work in raids even in areas where other mounts work. Is also made completely useless when Flying becomes unlocked.
Solution: You can mount your specified ground mount in combat. Reduces mounted movement speed whilst in combat to 20% additional movement speed. This way they can allow us to use it anywhere you can mount, you’re not running around at 100% bonus movement speed because fighting on horseback was not done at breakneck speeds outsidenof the initial charge.

Mograines Might: Please remove Cleaving Strikes and any need for us to be standing in death and decay to deal AoE damage. Adjust this to increasing Death and Decay, or granting an additional free charge and use in his summoning.

Apocalypse Now: I hope Army of the Dead is being reworked because at 8mins that’s a long time between goes vs 3mins baseline for Frostwyrms Fury.
Solution: Slap it on Apocalypse because the name also says Apocalypse funnily enough.
