[Feedback] OCE, Valor Acquisition, Heroic Queues, New Character Catchups

Hello

I am here to post about the current state of OCE in Cataclysm Classic and how we need some changes to the things in the title in order to help support the region a little.

Lets preface this; we currently have what? 5? active versions of WoW?

  • Classic Fresh
  • Classic Era
  • Classic Hardcore
  • Cataclysm
  • Retail
  • Season of Discovery

Soon we’ll have added to that list TBC Classic and Wrath Classic - fingers crossed we get era of those too for those that love those versions of the game for for folks who want to play!

There’s a lot of WoW and unfortunately, too much content to play any of these versions meaningfully once we get past Wrath.

The main culprit of this is the weekly tasks required to maintain effective participation in each version of the game. Specifically for Cata and Retail, Valor/Stones and catchup mechanics. Retail has decent catchup mechanics which are, overall decent, if not gated by valorstones - but this post will focus on Cataclysm specifically, and by extension, future expansions because the lessons learned here need to carry forward.

Cataclysm classic has the Elemental Runestones which, while on paper seem good, are ineffective if the Inferno Protocol queues are dead or struggling. Now I play horde and it’s still sometimes a 30 minute wait as ANY of the three given roles. For alliance it’s probably dead. Worse is waiting for those 30 minutes to be filled with players who are using very badly geared alts or a really bad group comp for the dungeon (Quad melee for Blackrock Caverns). The catchup mechanics mean nothing if I can’t actually utilize the mechanics to catchup.

There is another factor to this; why don’t Inferno protocol heroics drop 359 gear instead of 346? It seems like ya’ll just took the Wrath system and made it worse - we don’t even have kiss/curse affixes to be able to make things go faster or make it more interesting. Just a flat HP/damage increase prolonging the experience.

There are three heroic queues, all which award valor but each giving 3 different rewards and thus fracturing the waning cataclysm player base between them. I’d much rather go level in one of the other WoW versions than spend almost an hour trying to get 240 valor. It’s particularly bad that spending 1 hour grinding out my mid 40s in classic fresh feels like I’ve accomplished more than 1 hour of heroic queuing in Cataclysm

A currency/point system is good, but we need to drastically increase the rate in which we acquire them. When Cataclysm (and by extension MoP/WoD) had these systems, they were the only versions of WoW in a market that was not competitive for MMOs/online games. In 2024 this is no longer the case, and subsequently, this needs to be reviewed to accommodate for the 2024 market and many different versions of WoW that your players want to play (and you want us to play).

So to that end I have some solutions;

  • Cross Faction queues for RDF Heroics Cataclysm onward. This will help OCE alliance a long way. If Private Servers and retail can accomplish this, surely you can too.
  • Cross Region queues for RDF Heroics Cataclysm onward. Make the queue function like retail. We know it’s classic but this is a retail system so lets take the lessons they’ve learned already to make the queue faster for people. We’ll have Classic Era/TBC/Wrath to enjoy the antique systems that we enjoy.
  • Adjust the loot tables of Inferno Protocol and beyond to include normal loot of the previous tier, and have the runestones be reserved for heroic loot, similar to Wotlk.
  • Valor should be awarded on a per boss basis - 120 per boss, and instead of 240 valor per completion, give us more runestones instead. This will smooth out the gearing curve for alts and new/returning players.
  • If you don’t want to fix the drop tables for Inferno Protocol, Incentivize running Tier 11 content for gear. Double the loot and quadruple the valor that drops in thes raids. This will make the content a little more relevant for players and give us a reason to go in there for some fun. The valor means Firelands geared characters have a reason to go in and help the newer characters get gear.

I’m not a game designer, just an avid WoW player and mmo gamer. I can’t speak to the above from a design perspective but as a customer I’m struggling a lot right now. If you want us to play your games, make it a bit easier/engaging to manage the systems that come with it. The weekly tasks to maintain characters started taking off in Cataclysm but in the modern age these are much more outdated than the weekly tasks in pre-Cata versions of the game due to the way character power and gearing is different in those versions.

Hoping we get some communication on this subjuct

Mate… There’s no point anymore. The new classic release killed oceanic cata which is kind of sad to see the sheer fact one waits 30mins for a dungeon to get slapped with deadmines and watch 1 dps and the tank leave…

This exact situation is what sparked me to write this post actually :upside_down_face:

Can firmly say multiple people are seeing the same issue. Re releasing so many versions of classic has just demolished the game entirely. Even then jump into the new classic and forced to alliance due to such imbalance in the game…

Having multiple versions is fine. Great actually - I love being able to switch gears when I like to play different versions. I love that they are slowly killing the predatory private server meta by just bringing all the versions in house and making a profit to give us sustained development.

BUT they no longer exist in a bubble and there needs to be some adjustments made to outlying systems which detract from being able to play the versions of the game without feeling like we’re being punished in another.

I don’t want to mess with the original trio too much because that would erode what makes the original trio as wonderful as they are - but Cataclysm onward is much more malleable in terms of how they can adjust timesinks to make things easier and give us some breathing room.

One is only “forced” on pvp servers. And blizzard didn’t force that. Players did.

That forcing is to not have 70/30 or worse servers. The best way to avoid 70/30 is kill horde creation at 60/40. Or 50/50. Blizzard hasn’t said what the cutoff is.

Dreamscythe you can make horde anytime you want. as much as you want. PVE doesn’t care if its 90/10. It jsut means that 10 may have less raid crews running around.

You literally described being forced xD forced to play a pve server or forced to play alliance on a over crowded PvP server … The only other viable option is back to retail and forget classic /shrug

Arugal is a PVP server and in Classic 2019 it was a reasonable balance, but with the majority on Horde and the interest in the game ebbing/flowing over time, the change has drastically shifted Horde, leaving alliance kinda slim, which is deeply impacting their queues.

I used to think it was “fine” to have different expansions but after experiencing having all this classic servers it’s more clear that it’s a cash grab than anything else they are not supporting the massive loss of players moving to said servers with further changes to their decisions in the game.

Future versions of “classic classic classic” is just going to do even more harm than good when you have this currrent team of dev’s that don’t want to give enough atention to all of their servers somewhat equally.

It’ll only be a cash grab if they leave things in the state they are now, especially for OCE. Otherwise having different versions is completely fine. Classic Fresh is going great, HC has a lot of love, SoD is popular, Retail is going strong and, Classic Era seems fine, and raids aren’t dying in Cataclysm, but future proofing the dynamic is important and if we’re feeling these problems now, only a few weeks after Classic Fresh, it’s concerning what a few months down the line might look like.

You think only oce is affected because you’re not getting queues?

Talk about being a bit self centered… the entire game has been on coma for a while now. Just because they put a new mode with 100% more hp sponge and some overpriced items from the past raid and a pre nerfed raid is a good enough to call it a day? There’s servers on the US that are bleeding daily players… they don’t care.

Man I guess my bar is a bit higher than I thought for this conversation.

I can only provide feedback based on the region I’m in and how the issues affect us. I understand the US mentality that America is the greatest country on earth and therefore everything should be about them or must include them in some way - and fortunately, this feedback and requesting changes will affect the US by virtue of the way the game being patched works - but I don’t play on US/LATAM/EU side, so I can’t speak to their experience.

I CAN provide feedback and try to be constructive about pain points which are impacting our experience in OCE though.

Oceanic is not connected to US for rdf so yeah the queues are likely a lot worse, oce alliance has a raiding pop of about 650 and horde 4k on ironforge vs 45k+ (21k ally/25k horde) for US.

They have like 5 versions of the game for 1 team that is more focused on what things they can get from retail and make them work on their server (SoD) than anything you and me have to say to make the game a bit more interesting to keep people in the game in this version.

Sure for all I care they should make cross faction queues a thing for oce players if the game is not that popular over there… I don’t see any good thing of oce players being added to US queues for the obvious elephant in the room the lag… other than that you’re yelling at clouds here and light a candle tonight maybe this dev’s might stop working on SoD and do something for the oceanic region.

I imagine the only solution we will get is FCM to US west like the sod servers

It actually is but the criteria for matchmaking with them is so strict that you almost never see it. A few 5am 30+ min queues back in Wrath definitely saw some folks from US in RDF.

That feels even worse to know I think lol

I completely support this OP.

I’ve reached max level finally in Cata and have hit the brick wall of raid or die. It would be nice if there actually was a legitimate catchup system instead of this aberation where you already need to be geared to have a reasonable chance at completing the content.

I hit 85 on a rogue on the weekend at 314 ilvl. I’ve run 8 dungeons between 84 and 85 and gotten no upgrades aside from the quests or a dagger I bought with JP. They drop but I don’t win them.

I get that JP and VP are probably the main way forward. But man that’s gonna be a slog.

would be nice to be able to play the game over the holidays, ally oceanic dead af blizz
