Feedback: D.R.I.V.E

In today’s new PTR update, we’ve made significant changes to the D.R.I.V.E. system.

  • Increased the height the G-99 Breakneck can climb over obstacles, such as fences.
  • The D.R.I.V.E. Garage now requires you to unlock non-default parts. You can find them hidden throughout the Undermine and its activities.
  • The G77C Ultra (the engine with the lowest max speed) is now the default engine. The Pozzik is now an unlockable option.
  • Reduced the maximum speed of the GNZ Airmaster 9000 (the engine with the highest max speed) by 12.5%. Its acceleration at high speeds has been increased to compensate.
  • Boosts have been significantly retuned due to loading time constraints. We believe these changes will increase the level of control you find while boosting. Please keep feedback coming on how you feel about these new boost levels.
  • The Handcrank (the weakest boost) is now most effective at letting you maintain a higher than average top speed over long distances.
  • The Steamboil (the strongest boost) is very good at kicking you up towards your max speed, and can nearly double your max speed when you are already moving fast.
  • The Wildfuel Mk. 0 (the default boost) sits somewhere in-between these two.
  • Horns have been added.

Please let us know what you think after testing D.R.I.V.E. with the above changes. We have more improvements in development and we’ll share more soon.

Thank you!

Initial impression - it feels a million times better then the original implementation, especially the G-99’s ability to automatically travel over short height obstacles. Not getting stuck on every bit of terrain is a major improvement.

The default config feels decent. Maybe a little bit slow, but a lot easier to control and drift, and I think would be a good starting point for players.

Will keep testing and trying out different configs.

BTW, if anyone had DRIVE unlocked before on the PTR, you might need to go to the DRIVE mechanic’s shop and re-select car parts to be able to use the car.

If you have more improvements already, which clearly don’t require additional feedback, why wait on them instead of implementing them now?

Latest version has some pretty serious problems, like the Crazy Taxi arrow being permanently stuck on my character or my camera constantly spinning right, but I’m guessing these are just bugs.

It certainly feels better than previous builds. Little knee-high fences can be driven over instead of stopping your car, making it less important to have to jump, so it’s a vast improvement. The car still has a tendency to get stuck on weird corners.

I’m still rather dismayed that the most common feedback issue hasn’t been addressed: Drift and Jump are on the same button. It’s now easier to drift, but harder to jump, and it’s still annoying. Can we have the option to keybind drift to another button under “Vehicle Controls”?

For addons/macros, unless there is one that I haven’t seen yet (very possible), a macro condition like [advflyable] or an API command like IsAdvancedFlyableArea() available for D.R.I.V.E. would be very welcomed.

DRIVE feels better now than it used to but one major issue is still how often I go to drift and jump instead. I feel like they should be different buttons.

Re-posted from original thread:

Hey Blizz,

While the advent of D.R.I.V.E. is a great idea, it is missing one crucial point. The main flaw with D.R.I.V.E. is that you currently cannot run over other players and squish them like in GTA.

This significantly holds back the potential of this new feature, since the Undermine is clearly trying to draw inspiration from Brooklyn, NY, and the average NY and New Jersey experience revolves around not getting run over by the average subhuman behind wheels driving on their streets.

Please consider adding this feature, as I would appreciate becoming Undermine’s most nefarious pizza delivery driver (It’s not delivery, it’s DiGiorno’s!)

Best regards,
Brainard

I’d like to see a brake, and perhaps some feel for where then power and grip are when moving.

I understand the engine doesn’t work that way.

Also, drifting doesn’t feel good. The lack of control over speed means you’re always under steering or oversteering. With the lack of more granular controls, I think you should just make sure that drifting always works optimally.

I can’t think of a feature I have ever wanted less than this in a fantasy MMO.

Wow is a scifi fantasy. always has been.

Thank GOD horns have been added

Sadly they’re quite anemic. And nothing like the awooga horn from the goblin starting zone, which is far more ridiculous and perfectly suited to goblins.

Hopefully the awooga and an analogue of the General Lee’s horn get added for customization

Being able to go over small obstacles is a night and day improvement. I can actually drive around Hovel Hill without clipping on everything. I was even able to do the Junkyard Jaunt race without stopping once!

I see sounds were added to driving. No complaints here, it all sounds good.

There are a few improvements and flavor additions I would like to see:

  1. Drifting while turning with your mouse is a big hit and miss. Most of the time I find myself jumping instead of drifting. I’ve exclusively started using my keyboard keys for turning because of this. Can we allow customization to bind jump and drift onto different keys?
  2. Are there any plans for warmode interactions? It would be funny to cause enemy players to wipe out if you boost through them.
  3. Maybe we could add the radio from the goblin starting zone car to the Undermine car.
  4. It would be cool to have a GP race around the zone every hour or something. Kind of like the races in Dragonflight you could do against other players. Just add some kind of rewards this time so people want to compete.

While I applaud horns now existing, I am puzzled why they are not a further customizable element of the car’s load-out. I consider being able to switch between regular honk, oogah-horn, and full on General Lee to be much more important than acceleration or drifting.

The new improvements are all good changes imo. It feels much better being able to drive over many of the small obstacles.

My 2 main issues with the system are:

  • Jump and drift being the same button causes janky gameplay. Please let us rebind drift.
  • The bug where you continue autorunning after exiting the vehicle which can lead to your character spinning uncontrollably.

Also, drifting doesn’t feel good. The lack of control over speed means you’re always under steering or oversteering. With the lack of more granular controls, I think you should just make sure that drifting always works optimally.

Reverse works as a brake and while it doesn’t seem like you can use that while drifting, you can still let go of the acceleration and/or use the turning keys to change your drift line significantly.

My feedback is that I would prefer to be able to fly in the new zone.

They will take it into consideration.
