Ever since the Remix patch the fans (and CPU) on my MacBook Pro M2 Max (running latest macOS Sonoma 14.5 - which was the same before the patch also) now seem to run around 85-120% CPU which then causes the fans to go.
I even un-installed all Addons just incase something was causing an issue, but with no addon’s it’s exactly the same.
The strange thing is before I could run 3 seperate windowed versions of WoW on 2 monitors with no problems at all. No fans at all and very low CPU.
Since the Remix patch (and not changing any settings), the fans are now going constantly and when I check the CPU usage it’s always around 85-110%
And I’m just running WoW only. Even Quit battle.net just incase. And closed other Apps as well incase. But nothing seems to make a difference.
Did a Safe Boot as well. Nothing seems to make a difference.
So not sure if something changed or “broke” in the remix patch???
nothing is broken or out of ordinary with that cpu usage. that just means wow is using 1-2 cores. it can go as high as 200%
Are your fps lower than before?
i wills ay this, 14.4.and 14.5 adjusted fan curves some in a negative way. they stay off even longer than before, then turn really high to cool things off. instead of turning on earlier and preventing temps getting that high in first place. apples logic here is “quiet as long as possible” but without a curve that is proactive instead of reactive it basically has two modes now. quiet and loud. lacking a good in between without custom software that restores having an ACTUAL fan curve. this is more likely what you’re observing.
if you don’t like how hot or loud fans are you have two options really, make sure you use software to control fans. Or adjust graphics settings or fps cap to a sustained fps that doesn’t require keeping gpu under max load constantly.
Thanks for the reply.
Yes fps are a bit lower than before. And as mentioned before I could run two 5k displays with 3 versions of the WoW application (just duplicated the WoW app and called it WoW1, WoW2, WoW3 - and run 3 versions of it at the same time. (different accounts). With the 2 screens and running all 3 of them - no fans at all. And when I looked at Activity Monitor nothing was above 24% cpu usage for each seperate Application of WoW. And that was using 14.4 right through to before 14.5 and through 14.5 (as 14,5 came out May 13th/14th roughly). So had been running 14.5 with WoW since then. And no fans.
The fans have only been noticeable since Remix came out. Before remix when playing Retail with my mains - it was deadly silent and with higher settings than my iMac 27" (2017 model - which has become a slog to play on now).
But the fans have only been running since Remix patch was “activated” (I use the term loosely as not sure how to say it really). Since Remix went live - the fans now go all the time.
Yet, I’ve not changed anything in my setup or adjusted any setting at all. I even disabled all add-on’s incase one of them had had an update and was effecting it. But even with no add=on’s installed at all - the fans still go all the time.
But I’d be playing under macOS 14.5 since May when it came out with retail and no fans.
(so that would have been on the 14th and 15th). Then once I started playing Remix on May 16th, that was when I noticed the fans were running. Once I quit out of WoW, then the fans stop.
Open WoW again and the fans start up again. And I check CPU and find it’s up around the higher figures I mentioned. Yet before, it was always low.
iIt definitely was fine before Remix, it’s only since then I noticed it.
I guess I’ll have a play around with the graphics settings again and see if adjust it down slightly. Just weird it was all fine before on the same settings with nothing being changed.
And there’s various (different) recommendations of which are the best Graphics settings to use I find now too. I’d found a couple of posts with searching that recommended different things, so it’s always hard to find the “best fit” for the M2 Pro/Max/Apple Silicon settings. Thankfully I save screenshots of them, so I have what was working saved to go back to if I do adjust them.
Thanks again for the reply. Perhaps no one else has had the same thing happen. ![]()
that’s pretty much next to impossible without capping background fps, i suspect somehow your background fps got raised or turned off. when i multibox 2 or 3 wows I always set cap background fps to 8-12fps then wow will use almost 0 fps in the inactive windows but full frames in active window
ALso copying wow apps isn’t actually needed, just hit play on launcher multiple times. (EDIT< i realize now this only works for 2 instances, 3 does require copies.)
Hi,
I keep fps at around 60fps (foreground and background), as haven’t really worried about it going more than that to be honest. (Always been the same since it was added as a setting - I just left it be).
Have had it as low as 15.9 (Would attach a screen shot, but not sure can do that on the forums).
And yes, was aware of just re-launching from the launcher, but already knew for 3 versions you had to duplicate the App,so I’ve always done it via the Duplicated App way - as again it always just worked that way and was easier. (then I can name them WoW, WoW2, WoW3.)
I don’t always play 3 versions, just once in a blue moon it was handy for things.
All 3 were always in Windowed mode, so could swap from one to other and 1 window was the larger (main) and the other 2 were smaller.
But now I wouldn’t do it with the fan issue until I can resolve it. I thought I had it slightly better last night with little to now fan, but after about 10 mins it came back again.
Had played around with changing some of the Ultra settings (that it set for setting 8) to one below it. But didn’t make any difference. So will have to keep playing with it.
Thanks again for the reply.
