On two separate characters now, I have taken selfies with Fabious, but have not been granted the mount. You can see his name and body in both images.
I do not know what to do about this, because everything I’ve read indicates it should have worked.
You have to get closer to him. I tried from about your distance and didn’t get it, but when I got closer it worked.

I hate to be “that guy” but I think that’s stupid. He’s on screen and they should make sure it works. Both times he disappeared before I could get closer.
Somehow he’s become the most infuriating part of this. I was within attacking range even!

That’s how close I was. I agree, if he’s in the screenshot it should work no matter the distance.
Yeah, I opened a ticket the first time and the response I got was that it looked like it should work but they can’t do anything and to just try again.
Well now I have and it still didn’t. 
Well… your title should be “What am I doing wrong?” instead of “Isn’t working.”
Looks like this is the answer.

If it doesn’t work the third time, though, Fabious can stay wild and free. I can’t go running over every time if it’s not working for me for some reason.
The real issue I take is that other people got it from similar distances both times. =\
I can only imagine that it has trouble at range, and sometimes it works, but sometimes it doesn’t.
My suggestion is to get next to him. I was like 2 inches from him when i got my Fabious mount. Great thing is people are really good about announcing sitings of him and forming LFG groups for him.
The Crimson looks better, and it’s part of the meta achiev. Serves a purpose. Just stick with that one, forget about Fab.

I was the same distance you were and mine worked. Are you sure you checked your bag for it? Like you get an item and then click on it, it doesn’t instantly go to your collection
I did check, yes. Unfortunately it didn’t appear.

Weird, must just be a glitch then. When I got him he was a little further away than your second pic, but it worked.
I wasn’t even aware of how to get him when I was in the area and he came through the wall of water, lol. I saw him, targeted him thinking I had to kill him and couldn’t attack. I followed while getting attacked by red murlocs and looking him up on google at the same time and saw you had to take a selfie. I ignored the murlocs and rolled after him and finally got turned around and positioned right and took the pic and there he was.
