Hello,
just getting back into WoW and was wanting to try out tanking. So I’ve never tanked before, and tbh never really done much PVE content in shadowlands. What would be an ideal starter tank to learn M+ and raiding with?
Thanks

Guardian and brewmaster are probably the easiest/most forgiving.
100% guardian druid. Easy to learn, lots of fun to play. Incarn feels good.
Prot Pally is easy to pick up, has some great aoe/cleave aggro, and self heals
I would recommend running M+ dungeons as DPS before trying to tank them. The timer makes learning as you play very difficult and there isn’t much time to explain…that is unless you are playing with friends that don’t mind busting timers as you learn.
Guardian for starting out. Brewmaster once you grasp the concepts. Hpal when you realize God doesn’t exist, but you in fact are God.
On my healers I prefer Druid, Monk, or Warrior. They are easier to heal.
Demon Hunter is OK.
Paladin and Death Knight tend to take alot of damage and have spiky health.
Prot pally is solid, block smooths out spike damage to some degree, lots of self sustain through healing.
None of the tanks are hard to play. The difficulty is the psychology of having 4 other players in the group who will blame every slight thing, real or imagined, that isn’t perfect on you and bombard you with hate while you try to learn.
Brewmaster is not easy for new tanks, but bear sure is. Thrash, swipe, ironfur, CD’s and repeat. Even easier if you macro ironfur into thrash and swipe.
I reccommend dpsing mythic+ first to know the dungeon and mechanics. Better yet heal them first. Then tank mythic0, although this season the mythic + roster doesn’t have +0 for the new roster besides tazavesh.
Easiest tank everyone reccommends is druid. I only tank prot warrior so idk.
Some are deffinetely easier to heal.
prot pally hands down.
You have my sympathy. You should read some of the threads about tanking and how thankless it is. If you’re into pain maybe you should just bang your head against the wall.
I’ve always found Blood DK to be extremely unintuitive to play.
if your prot pally isn’t using their self powered instant heals, they have no idea how to play.
as someone with 17 60s, plays all 3 roles, and plays every single one of them, imo: guardian and prot pally are the easiest to play/deal with.
Oh god no, always go into a dungeon you don’t know as DPS as many times as it takes to learn the route and the enemies before ever healing.
I’d also recommend tanking first before healing, you can go into something like JY or ID with all that space, learn to pull enough but not too much so you don’t struggle, the healer doesn’t struggle, enough room for things like sanguine, enough room for error, you can pull small if your DPS are bad and once you get a better group and get better at tanking can start pulling big, still with plenty of room to move.
Once you start learning tank routes, pack sizes and what enemies do what you can than jump in to heal as you will know when to do big heals or just to top up and won’t get a fright when the BDK health drops by 70% instantly.
This TBH. I’d say pick a tanking class you don’t mind playing as DPS. None of the tank abilities are “hard”. The skill of being a tank is that you are responsible for setting the route, and setting the pace of the key. If you aren’t familiar with M+ and don’t have a stable group willing to teach you; then you’ll have a lot more success learning from PUGs as a dps.
Blood DK is super easy and you will most likely never die.
Easy for those who know how DS works, not so much for a new player who is trying to find their feet for the first time. You really need a WA or lots of practice with DS to know how to really get the most out of it.
Bear is by far the easiest, pop CD’s on a big pull and when you are low health hit your self heal and, that’s it.
