Long time player, first time seriously tanking was DF. I’m average, only run pug dungeons, and will be lucky if I survive a +2 after the squish. Just hit 80 in TWW and currently running dungeons & delves for gear upgrades, specced Lightsmith.
In situations where I’m losing aggro with multiple mobs, and DT and AS are on cooldown, I’ve been using Eye of Tyr as an AoE taunt. But after watching of Quazii’s M+ video guide, I see that Eye of Tyr has a whole new use when specced Templar.
So, if I spec Templar, will I lose this AoE taunt? Or the bigger question, have I been using Eye of Tyr as a crutch all this time when I shouldn’t have?
You shouldn’t be losing aggro with AS and SoTR. It’s interesting that you see it as an AoE taunt when it should primarily be used as a fairly strong defensive on a short CD.

Eye of Tyr as a threat snapper has historically been a valid use of the skill. I only just got my Prot pali up to 80, but I see they reduced the debuff from Eye of Tyr to only 6 seconds. Because of this nerf, I might drop the talent altogether (I leveled with the Lightsmith build, so it isn’t critical right now for my hero talent). But yeah … Sounds to me only 6 seconds of uptime means I’m blasting that on CD for damage if I’m speccing into it.
That being said, Avengers shield into Shield of the Righteous is generally pretty good to snap threat, if you’re using the talent that makes those two synergize.
Not really since we never had threat issues for several expansions now. Avenger’s shield and Shield of the Righteous is all we need for AoE threat management.
They probably mean as the pull starts if they aren’t pre-building 3 Hp going into it.
I can see that, but that can be easily avoided by not using Avenger’s Shield if you know the pull is going to end in the next <10 seconds.
Yea I sometimes forget to check my HP before the next pull, but not that often.
The times I need Eye for AoE taunt is usually when someone butt pulls a mob unexpectedly, or a caster decides to pull the next trash mob or two for me. Tis the pug life I lead.
I’m just surprised Eye isn’t usually mentioned as being useful as an AoE taunt. If I’ve got six things beating on me, and I need to taunt three more to gain aggro, Eye does that + gives me a defensive.
