This issue has been on my mind for a few years now, but only just getting around to asking “why”.
When I am not using a VPN, and there is an update in the battle.net launcher for any of the installed games, I fail to get above 50KB/s download. But, when I enable my VPN just for the launcher, I am able to download well above 10MB/s, still slow, but significantly faster than without the VPN.
My internet is 1000/50mbps and it very much performs with in 7% of that, I am in Australia.
Seems like this is counter intuitive for you to deliberately restrict update speeds based on regions.
All to do with routing to the blizzard servers I would think. Guess that the vpn somehow changes what route your connection takes to actually get to blizzard. Not all isp’s optimise their systems for gaming at all and give priority to business over gamers
yeah that makes sense I guess. I would have assumed that they would have the update also pulled from the oceanic servers for oceanic players, but maybe not.
My ISP used to be specifically for gamers with their own tunnel to the west coast of the US for lower latency on US servers, but i suspect that has changed over the years as they have changed owners a couple of times recently.
