Extremely slow asset load

Sometimes, most often after a computer restart or after I’ve been playing something on Steam for a while, assets are horrendously long to load. I’ll log in fine and my framerate will be good (70+) but NPCs and other things just don’t load. I seriously stood there for 5 minutes waiting for Soridormi to appear.

Is your hard drive too full? Running out of RAM?

Nope, almost a terabyte on the hard drive and RAM is fine. The game “runs” fine too, I just don’t see a lot of stuff. Just to check if it was my system I ran FF14 on my 2nd monitor at the same time and noticed zero difference in how well WoW was running.

It’s like I have something set to prioritize framerate over everything and so it just doesn’t load some things until it’s good and ready.

That’s very odd and sounds exactly like when hard drives are overfull or dying. Did you do any basic troubleshooting? Repair the game? Reinstall?

I did repair, I did not reinstall yet. I was hoping to avoid that.

Loading screens and servers swaps have been painfully long for me since the lame dragon racing cup in kalimdor. Launch wow the character selection screen pops up then when I chose a character that loading progress line moves so slow lol.

That’s usually because of addons. With no addons, my loading bar takes like 2 seconds to fill and load the game, lol.

A terabyte left? Are you on a mechanical drive?

Was not a problem before the kalimdor race patch. Logging into server is also slow then loading screen is ok till the last bit 25% or so. Retail, wrath and classic also doing this lol. Must be my 13900k and 990 pro nvme are too slow.

So have you reinstalled like I recommended? Should be fast with your specs. I’ve seen absolutely zero change in loading speed in the last year. You also made no mention of what you did with the addons.

Reinstalled, turned off all addons. I get fast load screens with no addons but it still takes a while for everything to show up. Load screens aren’t the issue, it’s that I load in about the same as I always have but every interactible takes a long time (NPCs, vault, profession tables, etc.)

Oh, is it an AMD GPU?

Nvidia. It’s an older card but this is a new problem.

Be specific. What model

Geforce GTX 1060 6 GB. As a test I just cranked my graphics to max and still getting 60 FPS in Valdrakken.

Something else that tends to happen when I can’t see assets is I’m literally blocked from going places I can’t see. Like there will be an invisible wall into the vault before the assets load.

Even on fairly graphics intense things where other people say they have issues I’m fine, hence why I think I must have something set strangely. Other weird things are if I’m playing my Druid, I’ll be perfectly fine with most graphics but I’ll be in bear form while still appearing in caster form, casting thrash just fine but making animations as if I’m a Warrior or something. Or my personal favorite, sprinting across the sky for quite some time in “flight form”.

Were you able to find a solution? I’m having the exact same problem that you just described.

Ryzen 7 5800x3d
Nvidia RTX 4080
32GB 3600Mhz RAM
1TB Samsung SSD

Did you ever run a WinMTR or PingPlotter to see if it’s a connection issue instead?

Yes, nothing unusual. I really don’t think it’s has anything to do with connections since stuff still works, I just cannot see it. Even some ground effects will simply not render but will hurt.

Unfortunately, those are the only other tools we can use in the forum to try to track down the problem. Beyond that, I’d recommend a local PC tech.

Is there some “prioritize FPS over everything” setting? Or load screen time? I feel like that’s probably the issue since it runs fine but doesn’t load assets until it’s good and ready. Even at max graphics the game runs well.

Example: on something like Sarkareth, other people will complain about frame rate issues during some of the bigger fire events. I’ll never have frame rate problems but the first time he casts a Fire Breath I just won’t see it.
