Extremely high latency since returning

Hello
I haven’t played WoW in a long time and thought I’d return only to find the game completely unplayable with world and home latency over 1000. I have better internet than what I used to have, so I’m confused.

Doing a speed test my Download Mbps is 425.75 and my upload is 88.02 on a wireless connection. I need to run to the store and grab a ethernet but everyone I’m talking to is telling me this is not a my internet issue.

If anyone could give me some advice on what to do I’d appreciate it. Otherwise I’ll just have to ubsub again.

Thanks.

I started having issues last year with latency. Everytime I tried to do an solo shuffle my latency jumped from the normal 180ish to over 400 and often times higher.

I’ve connected to US servers from Australia since 2007 and have never had latency issues like this. I logged into one of my old US servers that I played on when I lived in America still and my latency was over 800…Those servers use to sit at like 240ms from Australia, and that was before all the internet was fiber-optic.

It’s really disheartening having to connect to US servers to do rated PvP with this lag issue.

Blizzard no longer publishes the server IP’s or offers troubleshooting for latency, so it isn’t as easy to determine where things are going wrong. Generally we need to figure out if the issue is close to you, like related to your modem or router, or further from you, like somewhere along the path to the server.

Testing if it is close to you, usually you want to power cycle your modem and router and see if that helps. Then try connecting via ethernet directly to the router, or right to the modem bypassing the router, should let you know if any of that is not working right. If you want, you can run a test like winmtr and it can help show if there are any issues, which is something free you can do before buying an ethernet cable.

If it is further from you, using a VPN is the best way to identify that. So if you get a free VPN and using it fixes your latency, then you know there is an issue with the routing your ISP is using. Typically, they will fix that over time without you saying anything, but you can complain to them about it, it’s just their customer service doesn’t typically look at issues like that so they are very likely to just test your modem and tell you everything is fine, unless it is a very widespread issue that front line customer support has been made aware of.
