Expulsom and RNG

Hey Blizz,

I just wanted you to know how much I’m enjoying professions this expansion. It’s extremely exciting to craft thousands of bracers to put in your scrapper. Getting an expulsom is such a rush.

Also, then to craft my BiS item with the hopes that I get the right stats is such a thrill. It’s so great to put so much time and gold into it only to get the wrong stats over and over and over again. But I can’t wait until I get the right piece. It’s going to be such a thrill and such a sense of accomplishment. I was able to do it with skill and determination. What a system! Thank you for designing such a rewarding experience.

I suspect sarcasm here…this is actually a criticism of…RNG? Well, RNG has been part of crafting in MMOS for at least 19 years. It is a fine old tradition.

Is there an alternative? What would be better? How does a game creator balance? We know it is bad game design to make it “trivially easy to craft a BIS.” No game does that! If the game did that, why would players do dungeons and raids, hoping for drops? No, that is not acceptable.

You could disallow crafters entirely, or only let crafters craft substandard items – no BIS items, for sure.

Or you could use RNG, to make “crafting a BIS” very difficult. It’s a compromise.

OP, is some other system better? (for a game design, NOT better for you)

Amen to that.

A system requiring one player to craft more than 5 pants to not get versatility (me) but another player 1 pants to get BIS stats is not a good system.

Make the grind long and let the player chose the stats. Or give the player the ability to reroll for a low cost like in Dreanor. You could reroll like once a day without too much trouble.

RNG will always be part of a mmo but the amount of RNG in BFA is beyond ridiculous. The first sentence that would come to my mind to describe bfa would easily be RNG.

I agree 100% with the original poster.
It would be reasonable to expect that by mastering your craft you would have some understanding of what you were making.
If you set out to make a red robe, you wouldn’t expect RNG to kick in and cause your robe to come out green.
Or for the Enchanter, when they set out to create that scroll of “Enchant Ring for Haste” … you wouldn’t want RNG to set in and give you mastery!

I think even blizz knows they screwed up with expulsom. I would be scared to count how many bracers i scrapped this xpac to make expulsom when i could have been doing something else in game. Huge time sink and just not needed.

i can’t make anything, i am a gatherer, herbs and hides.
The higher powered mats, this expac, are soul-bound.
So, for me, ex-pul-som is vendor trash.
Lucky me, that i avoided crafting high lvl gear carrying the worst possible secondary stats as is the seeming norm.

Expulsom was a great idea in theory, but blizz was on drugs when they set the resource costs on crafted items.
