Explain this "seasonal wipe" concept please

I have been seeing this concept of classic+ fresh start servers with “seasonal wipes” being bandied about.

Would someone here do me a favor and explain what treating wow seasonally actually means and how that would play out in a Classic+ version of the game?

Its for fresh servers not classic +. Fresh classic servers would reset every year or so. The survey had options for a year and 6 months or the 2 year cycle like classic was. Personally, I don’t think the classic era players would want an accelerated content schedule.

They delete the server, and all the toons on it, after a set period of time.

For real? Why would anyone want this?

Some people like racing to endgame and then get bored.

Because playing on a fresh server is fun, and some people want to keep having that experience.

So, everything gets reset back to zero every so often?

And why would this be a good thing?

Seasonal business models rely on fear of missing out (fotm) for steady revenue where the main product goes free and content is broken up into monthly micro-transactions and vaulted after seasons end to be recycled at later dates. It’s extremely predatory and unethical using fear as a motivator and Bungie gets a LOT of bad press for doing it in Destiny 2.

So they can start over. They only want to play vanilla content. When naxx comes out there is nothing new. So after a few months of naxx they want to start over. You’ve never played pservers have you? That’s how they worked. You’d play on a pserver till you cleared so much content then start over on a new server.

Because then everyone starts fresh.

Starting fresh is appealing, but it also turns WoW into an Arcade game at dave and busters.

The only thing that matters is who had the high score at the end of the season.

So don’t play on those servers?

Sunk cost servers more like it.

Have you ever replayed a game in your life? When you go to play a game you really like again, do you start on the same save file where you left off where you completed the game? Or do you start a new one so you can go through all the stages again.

So, are we going to have classic, classic fresh start, classic fresh start seasonal, classic+, and the bc versions thereof?

That’s like 10 game versions in addition to retail.

All so people can continually “replay” level 1 to 60 or 1 to 70?

Isn’t that what creating a new character is for?

So this blood elf going ape about predatory tactics is misrepresenting what a seasonal server would actually be like, and what a reset server would be like.

People like fresh, they like the opportunity to reroll in a fresh and fair environment… think manifest destiny… moving westward… over and over again. Servers die regardless of what the intention is long term… people eventually stop playing even if everything is permanent… or a new expansion comes out and invalidates everything you’ve done previously.

Servers that reset will attract a specific type of player… mostly previous private server players that are used to rerolling on new servers after extended stays on other servers. There is something liberating about not feeling tied to your character… regardless of the amount of time you’ve invested … and in my personal experience it’s actual a much less toxic / less stressful environment than the normal version of the game which actually is ruled by FOMO / cost sunk / and people fearing that they won’t be able to do X or get X item before the next raid or exp comes out.

TL;DR
There are many ways to play the game and this is just another way of playing which will attract specific types of players.

I mean look at current classic new era. Its dead mate. Why hold on to something that just rots away in the basement anyway?

I’m generally against forcefully wiping out someone’s progress but the upside is that this would be a huge disincentive for people to buy gold or do GDKPs.

Yes and no. What you have to understand is that the appeal of mmo’s is playing with other people. It’s exciting for everyone to start at the same time as you and have an opportunity to compete to be the best, the fastest, whatever. You want people to be on the same level as you so you can find groups for low level content, everyone’s gear is similar, so you’re forced to run 5 mans for pre bis, etc.
