Explain ILVL, Scaling and Damage

So in dungeons I am noticing that people who are much lower ILVL than me are doing more damage than me. I am wondering where does damage scale, just dungeons? Does it scale in raids, world content, etc? Also, if I was in a lfg and we were killing world bosses, would it make sense that someone with 330 ilvl would outperform me at 270 ilvl, or should this be scaled?

Scaling only applies to level. So assuming you’re talking heroic or mythic where everyone is 120, if youre doing less dps with a significantly higher ilvl, odds are you’re doing something wrong. Talents, rotation, etc.

So, I’ll try to be helpful here.

Your damage is not directly related to your ilvl. There are MANY factors that can increase or decrease your dps.

First, make sure you have an understanding of your stat priority and weights. This is generally your primary stat (INT for mage), followed by secondary stats which increase your critical damage, speed of casting, etc.

Second, find a good rotation. You need to have basic understanding of how your spells work, and how to prioritize them.

Third, knowing how to manage your cooldowns. These are abilities or on use trinkets that increase your damage done, or activate a special spell that will aid you or your team.

This is just the basics. Scaling is only a thing when you enter events such as timewalking.

I would suggest that you put a piece of masking tape over the part of your screen that shows ilvl when you open your character up. You can have a toon with perfectly itemized ilvl 340 gear, and a complete mastery of rotation that will destroy an ilvl 375 person who just slapped on gear to get that extra point an has no idea what they’re doing.

wait…what?
the other player had 330 and you have 270?
Higher ilvl = higher stat bonuses = higher numbers for your health, damage, etc.
So yeah…it would make perfect sense that a 330 would be destroying your DPS at 270.

At higher character levels the game has higher gear levels opened up to you and they give higher stat bonuses.
Knowing your class is critical too…you cant just punch keys and expect to do decent DPS…but assuming you are playing your spec right, yes…ilvl does absolutely make a huge difference in your DPS, health, etc.
THAT is what those stat bonuses getting bigger and bigger as our ilvl increases is all about.

Next time you are about to swap out a piece of gear that has a stamina bonus higher than your current gear, watch and see what happens to your health when you put the new gear on, assuming it does have a higher stamina bonus.

ilvl also effects mob health (as far as I’m aware, that’s all)

however I think ilvl scaling only happens in the open world, instances are static I believe.

someone can correct me if I’m wrong.

Yeah - so I think you might be falling in the forum conversation trap.

The basics:

  • Collect and equip gear with higher ilevel. Until you’re feeling confident with the game, just do this. Someone will inevitably come tell you that sometimes ilevel is not the best measure and they’ll be right, but for now - hunt for ilevel.

  • Practice. Skill makes up a lot of your performance. Check out icy-veins or similar. Read up on your class. Practice your rotation. Chances are you’re leaving a lot of damage on the table if you’re being outperformed by a 270.

This game is about continual improvement. If you have your mind on that, its hard to go astray.
