Can people explain the niche/mechanics of all dps specs? For example, the only one I really ONLY get so far is Frost DK and how it pretty much revolves around Pillar of Frost and how spending runes increases the strength bonus. Therefore you have a window where you sink runes and at the very end you have the money shot Wyrm/Chains of Ice with Frozen Heart talent. Then I know that Feral druids are about putting up physical DoT’s while Affliction Warlocks put up spell DoT’s, I guess? What is every DPS spec’s “thing”, exactly?
With all the classes and dps specs, that’s a lengthy thing you are asking for if you are looking for any real detail into their rotations. Have you thought about just reading up on them individually?
Use Icyveins.

Honestly, the best place to start would be the class guides on Wowhead.

I don’t want explanations on rotations. Where did I say anything about rotations??? I want to know their NICHES or GAMEPLAY STYLES. Like Ferals are about physical dots/bleeds. You’re playing whack-a-mole with debuffs, right? While a Frost DK does NOT emphasize dots, since all they get is Frost Fever and instead your damage comes from “how well can I maximize my 60 second CD” unlike feral or afflic emphasis on DoT’s. THAT is what i’m referring to. Also I don’t need one person to say them all. Just “ok so the way Arcane mage works is…” and that’s one spec down. That’s fine too.
The works already been done. Icyveins…Wowhead. Read.
Unholy DK: Your objective is to get your Apocalypse, Unholy Blight, and Dark Transformation cooldowns down to within ~5 seconds of one-another.
Havoc DH: Never cap on Fury, Eye Beam on CD, Immo Aura on CD, Meta on CD after you Eye Beam.
Fire Mage: Fireball Combust Fire Blast Fire Blast Pyro Pyro PF Pyro Fire Blast Pyro PF Pyro Fire Blast Pyro PF Pyro FB Pyro for Single-Target
Fireball or Pyroblast into hardcast Flamestrike into Combustion into Fire Blast twice into Flamestrike, Fire Blast PF Flamestrike Shifting Power Fire Blast twice Flamestrike PF PF Flamestrike Dragon’s Breath for AoE.
MM Hunter: Never hold onto your Rapid Fire for too long, never overcap on Aimed Shot charges, always spend your Precise Shots, never let Steady Focus fall off, use Kill Shot on CD when possible. Double Tap into Explosive Shot if talented into Wild Spirits into Volley (if talented) into Trueshot into Aimed Shot twice into Rapid Fire into Aimed Shot. Never overcap on Aimed Shot charges but use Rapid Fire on CD while doing so.
Sure. Hunter - shoot things until they die. Try not to die at the same time.
Literally the laziest post. Go to Wowhead or Icy veins
Thank you. THIS is closer to what i’m talking about. I don’t really care for knowing rotations, like I said but this is way more helpful at least.
And yet this forum will entertain the most ridiculous troll posts, feed the most obvious bait threads and give them 500+ replies, and yet when someone comes looking for genuine gameplay knowledge or information that’s actually relevant to the game the response is “uR lAzY!!” Get bent man.
Because troll posts are fun this is just lazy and pathetic. You get bent MAN.
In a nutshell:
Classes like hunter and warlock are best for solo with pet utility. Mage and rogue not so much, but they’re glass cannons, meaning they hit hard. Warriors, Paladins, and DKs can go toe to toe without taking much physical damage but don’t hold up great against magic. Monks and Demon Hunters are like kids who need Ritalin. Druids and Shaman will get you around the map the best and most efficiently. Priests are complicated.
The rest is dependent on what experience you want to get out of the game. Specs are a lengthy progressive thing, so icyveins is your best solution for that.
How though? How do they differ? That’s my point. What makes a warlock and hunter different then if they are both pet classes? And this isn’t even a correct description since MM hunters are supposed to DISMISS their pet.
What are the GAMEPLAY MECHANICS of the classes, not the lore and class fantasy identities.
This doesn’t even have any thing to do with DPS.
I did give you the generic fundamentals. I’m not going to do the homework for you.
P.S. Just because MM gets a 10% boost in damage for dismissing pets doesn’t mean you have to run without one.
Rogue. Pointy end towards enemy.
Not that hard.
Affliction: Maintain DoTS and debuffs (like Haunt and Shadow Embrace) on as many targets as possible, don’t cap on Soulshards and plan your burst around 1 minute intervals.
Balance: Alternate between Solar and Lunar Eclipses, using your resources in your Balance of All Things burst window. Every 2 minutes, CONVOKE GO BRRRRRRR, or every 3 minutes depending on whether the fight lasts long enough to let your cooldowns realign.
Go look at the overviews of classes in any number of guides out there.
No you didn’t. “lol rogue hit hard!!!” How? Are they a proc-heavy class? Are they about buff uptime? debuff uptime? What makes the rogue specs different from themselves and why take that over say a fury warrior? BESIDES lore or class immersion. That’s obvious to anyone, rogues get stealth, warriors don’t but get X, Y and Z instead. I’m talking about the nuances of their game mechanics.
These people had no problems at least giving a super quick rotation overview. If you’re going to be useless then save yourself the typing and don’t reply.
Good lord… If I wanted to do that I wouldn’t be asking here for something quicker now would I? The wowhead guide on Frost DK’s " How to Play Frost Death Knight in Shadowlands" doesn’t even ONCE mention Pillar of Frost which the spec more or less revolves around… despite it being the “most iconic CD.”
Do you want rotations?(guides)
Or do you want overviews?(again, guides)
The info is out there, several times over. Why do you want people here to regurgitate it for you?
I’m not looking to know the class inside and out, just an idea of how it works.
Like I said, i only really get Frost DK so if someone said “how’s that spec work?” I’d say (provided i’m right, i’m no expert at DPS hence this thread) :
Your dps revolves around pillar’s 12 second window where you spam your rune costing abilities to get as many extra 1%'s in as possible and end with a nuke like Cold Heart chains of ice or FW’s fury. you get crappy ranged spells though and just one DOT so if youre not constantly in melee range (and dk’s have bad mobility so keep that in mind) then your dps will drop. Also it’s got good aoe with Remorseless Winter Breath of Sindragosa and Frostscythe and it’s a little proc based with rime and killing machine.
Wow, 3 mins of typing to give someone the gist of a class. Is that so godamn hard? I’ve had 2 people do that so far already in the thread for multiple ones too.
See?? LIKE THIS.
