Last time I had a sub was around WoD expansion. I made a level 58 Evoker during the 3 day free play back when the expansion dropped. I purchased one month sub, my character is now level 61. I decided to focus on unlocking the allied races. There is absolutely no directions of any sorts on how to do it. The whole process is extremely confusing. I can guarantee if this was the experience in any other AAA game, it would absolutely get torched by users. Somehow, WoW can get away cause “screw new player experience” attitude. Blizzard, please you to fix it. Here is what I had to do by the way
With level 61, go to Chromie. Can’t select any expansions. The Dragonflight quest keeps popping up.
Go online and research that you have to talk to the Warchief’s Herald.
Get the quest from Warchief’s Herald, watch several cutscenes, things seem on track.
Except once you are on the island, there is no way to tell what to do next other than do every single quest in sight.
Back researching online that you have to talk to Nathanos . The dude exists in at least two locations that I know of at the same time (some sort of wizard) and you have to go to some random boat (the one you arrived on?). He has orange quests and yellow quests, and orange quests seem important, so I chose those. Perhaps it was my settings, but none of the quest givers for the quests I was trying to take have the quest mark over the head so I spend alot of time moving my mouse over NPCs seeing if they have any quests during the three foothold.
First two footholds seem straightforward.
But after I finish the second foothold, Nathanos (or is it his twin, Yathanos?) does not have those orange quests anymore.
Another trip to Google. Oh, I need to complete “Island Expedition” quest. There is absolutely no way a new player like myself would have known that.
Complete “Island Expedition”. Now Nathanos gives your the third foothold quest.
Complete the quest, no clue what to do next.
Research - talk to a dwarf in the location where you have the portals.
I just finished this step and now need to get Friendly reputation with three different factions(?). How? I guess its another trip to Google.
Unacceptable Blizzard. Fix your game, introduce QoL one expects from the modern game, instead of dumping yet another mechanic that will be obsolete in the next expansion.
They should remove the requirements to unlock allied races and leave it for everyone. New players won’t find it fun to go through all that work to unlock the race they wanted to play with from the start.
Or at least make it so that people just have to do all the quests from a race-related map (like Zuldazar for Zandalari).
I played in Legion but stopped after 3-6 months. I’ve gotten back into WoW with DF and its been amazingly fun. I too have went on the grind to unlock the allied races because some of them seemed cool (currently have all but the nightborne unlocked).
And I agree - it is rough and tedious. At first it was a rather fun and enjoyable way to level alts and experience BfA (which I missed), but it quickly became “how fast can I click through quest lines and run to the next quest giver.”
Furthermore, some of the guides on google and even wow head are out dated. Some of these unlocks have changed during several previous patches. I’ve had to scour discord communities and forums for answers (example - Mechagnomes, at one point you could do the first part on Horde, but then apparently that broke in DF - so I had to redo everything on Alliance).
Apparently the nightborne unlock takes around 20 hours of questing - that’s really discouraging after spending upwards of 25-30 hours unlocking the Kul Tirans, and 20 hours or so before that unlocking the mechagnomes. I’d rather be spending that time playing DF, the xpac that caused me to get back into WoW.
Which is my plan. I’m going to ignore the nightborne for now since its not worth the time - which is personally annoying to me since the Nightborne is the race that originally got me excited to unlock the allied races. I saved it for last since it seemed to have the most confusion surrounding it due to changes over time. The advice I got was just start fresh in legion and level up there, which isn’t fun imho since I just did that for Kul Trius / BfA - not to mention, again, I want to play DF!
I made this toon with the specific goal of unlocking KulTirans. Every action I’ve taken (outside of a few tmog trips, treks to SW for riding training, and a few valentine’s day event runs) has been expressly towards that goal.
I’m current NINE hours in, and not even done with the second part of the first achievement (did Stormgarde, mostly done with Drustvar). I still have to do a whole third of the first achievement, the second meta achievement, and then the crap cherry on top, the embassy questline.
It’s absolutely unreal how much effort this takes 5 years after the expansion launched.
I am pretty new and I’ve wanted to try several races but simply don’t have the patience or free time to go back and do entire expansions to unlock them.
It’s been 6 freaking years since legion and you still need to do a long questline to unlock the races. It’s annoying
Allied race is actually super simple. It just requires time and efforts. Which is why none of you wants to actually do it.
It’s simple. You quest through the entire BfA. Start in one zone and do all the quests available repeat that to the next zone… and next zone and after that you’ll have achieved most of what is needed to select which allied race you want to start working on.
Yeah and by the time you unlock the races everything is considered low level content so you’re not being rewarded appropriately with gear/XP/anything really. You will hit 60 before the third branch of bfa campaign for instance, which isn’t even halfway to unlocking the races
