Expansion specific servers

Okay. I miss burning crusade. Like. A lot. And WoW went through a lot of effort to make that expansion. Some people miss other expansions. And honestly. The people who would sit down and play old content all day are probably in the minority. But that doesn’t mean they don’t exist. There’s probably 30,000 to 60,000 players or so that would enjoy this (estimating off of my quick googling of existing private servers fixed on past expansions)

You could start one server locked at classic and when you finish you have the choice of bouncing to a burning crusade server or staying locked in for now and so on for each expansion in order. Perhaps these servers could be even gated behind a paywall to support their creation.

I feel like a lot of people will like this. People who missed the expansions altogether and wanna play with old game mechanics could. Some people really liked the struggle of finding a group to go with them to do something as simple as a heroic.

I hope Blizzard considers this. I know it’s been probably suggested before. I also know blizzard could probably pull in 5-10m per year in subscriptions from people excited to play these. Idk if that’s enough for blizzard to dedicate 2-3 devs to setting this up or not. I feel like it would be.

Thoughts?
Won't happen. There's little to no incentive for Blizzard from a profit standpoint, unless they charge extra for it, which most people wont pay for.

The model they appear to be using with Classic is that they expect people currently not subscribed to the game to subscribe--so it's free with a current subscription.

I don't think that model has a lot of legs to it, but we'll see.
To be fair part of those "players" on private servers exist on private servers because what those servers offered is free.

Hell. I’d happily pay an extra $5/mo to have access to this server as an add on to main servers anyway. The content already exists. Blizzard already made it. I don’t agree with the other poster. I think there’s some people who will come back purely to play what originally got them into WoW.

I'm mostly concerned with what happens with a static game (no new content) without the population that the main game enjoys.

Like I said, we'll see.

Then why aren’t they on the free servers for BFA? They’re still clustering onto TBC/WoTLK servers.

I imagine many would pay if their was an option. Who wants their server to be run by an amateur to may shut it down randomly?

Many also don’t wanna play on illegal servers. Myself included.
That's how they do progression servers in EQ, they send out a voting sheet to all accounts in game and you choose do you want the next expac now, in 6 months, and further on. And they go by what was voted for the most. I think the voting happens after the current raids have been defeated. Usually like 6-8 months after it started. Now EQ has like 8 different progression servers at all different points of expacs. I went back and played on one for a little while it was fun for a while but I always found myself going back to live.

I get this fear but I doubt more than 100-200k people will play old expansion servers. Probably just enough for 1 server each. It’s not like millions won’t still be on other servers.

Runescape has a few hundred thousand players and they still have a justifiable company. WoW finds these numbers unworthy? Why?
I liked the Everquest progression servers. The problem is it hurts the live servers population.

They would have to time it right. Like during lulls in content to help with retention. This could make it worth their wild.
Sorry but with all the kvetching about "community" it would fracture what is tenuous at best. If WoW was till rocking Wrath level subs that would be one thing, splitting everyone in expansion-locked themes = bad.

People are always welcome to lock themselves to specific expansions right now as it stands. Get a group of friends and lock your XP. It's what I'm doing right now because I don't want to wade into the mess BfA is right now.
