Expansion Max Item Level Instead of Seasonal IL

Hello all, I will just dive in. On the cusp of a new season I am super excited for all the new content and new sets and new set bonuses. One thing I am not excited for is for all of my characters item level’s (I play a lot of alts) to all of a sudden become crap and have to grind them up again only to finally get them where I like them again right in time for a new season haha.

Personally I would love it if Item Level cap was set at the start of an expansion just for example item level cap for Dragonflight could be IL 500. And as you play through the expansion you can get your characters up to that, when new patches & seasons come out they include all the great new stuff they include now but max IL does not increase. This would make it so the “old” tier set from the first raid of the expansion are still just as viable as the new ones.

The reason you would want to get the new tier set is the new set bonuses offer a different style of play, so by the end of an expansion you could have collected several tier sets all at max IL and trade out which ones you want to wear depending on what set bonuses you want. Thus adding variety of play styles with your character, also of course the new transmog which if we are being honest is what 75% of people are doing the raid for anyway.

I feel like I would play the game far more as after getting my main character to max item level I would want to get all of my alts geared up and I would feel like there would be a real reward in doing so as they would actually be viable and playable in high end content for the whole expansion.

Currently I can only really play two characters seriously as they are the only ones I have time to keep geared up every patch and I just have to accept the fact that all the rest of my characters will just not be viable in high end content this expansion as if I spend time gearing them up then I will fall behind on my main before the next patch. This would not be the case if max IL was expansion related. On top of this I would be SO much more excited for a new expansion this way as I would not be burned out from grinding my character every few months, gear grind fatigue has claimed quite a few friends of mine who used to play this game and moved to MMOs where there is an expansion based BIS gear so they don’t feel like they need to grind constantly just to stay relevant. Personally I like that feeling of collecting all the best BIS of my character and feeling like “I won” and just being powerful for a while before the new expansion comes out and I do it all again. With it going up every season I don’t get that feeling and I don’t really get that feeling when I see another player decked out in all fully leveled BIS gear like “oh woah! check that guy out!” because I know in a month it will just all be crap anyway haha.

just wanted to get peoples thoughts on this topic, I am sure some of you will hate this idea and that is fine but what are your thoughts one way or another and why do you have those opinions?

Source is I made it up

No thanks.

We would see a lot of posts like this,

“I’m forced to do old content for my BiS”

“I’m tired of running VOTI for my BiS”

Trinkets and rare drops like eranog ring, brood ring, raz bow ect would now be perma BiS all expansion and be boring.

The problem is balance. There is a very very VERY good reason why tier sets from past expansions are inactive. Being either extremely OP or unusable because of massive class changes (look at Legion Legendry’s effects vs the class/spec now). For example Druids T3 set in WotLK Classic needed to be nerfed because of how OP it was for druids where a level 60 raid gear item is more powerful than level 80 raid gear.

Another big issue is players time, if a raid guild is already raiding Vault in 5 hours and a new raid comes out and Vault items scale up to the current raid’s they will have to split their time between the old raid and the new raid. An issue with Classic Vanilla, everyone wants to do the current raid and not go back to Molten Core/BWL for that 1 rare drop (thunderfury, sulfurace, etc).

On top of that there are many many other issues.

The best you are ever going to get is a “Best of” Season at the end of expansion drought featuring Fated Raids like S4 of Shadowlands where the fated raid rotates each week.
