Confession time: I’ve literally never once used that button
It was an invaluable button for those in the days of limited Vigor, where if you land somewhere high with lacking Vigor and want to go somewhere lower to collect something but didn’t want to wait for Vigor to recharge to get moving again.
Also for Divebombing into enemy players in WPvP and having an instant escape option. Or for when you want to fly a long distance and have a way to just teleport back to where you started, since the timer is rather generous.
Just for future reference, if you’ve not figured it out yet, you can activate glide by hitting your jump button (default space bar) just like on Demon Hunter

Sadly the best story I have isn’t nearly as dramatic. I had just been levelling my Evoker and had gone back to my Shaman to do some world quests. Forgot what character I was on and jumped off a mountain, only to realize I had no way to glide. It was only about a 7 second fall before I went splat though.
That was the second time that happened. I did something very similar in Legion after I had been playing my Demon Hunter and had a moment where I forgot which character I was on.
