Evoker roll

Who else is gonna go for an evoker over mage since frost is getting shafted again?

I haven’t tried them yet. I don’t know if I’ll switch or not yet.

I played evoker on the ptr, devastation in my opinion has one of the worst designed single target caster dps rotations i have ever played.

Great Utility and all, but man oh man that single target rotation is just awful. I wont be playing one until it gets fixed.

The single target rotation is just so clunky, no synergy on top of being hyper simple. Its honestly such a shame i was hoping for something like simple to pick up hard to master but there is not much to it at all.

Mage feels more fun to play in my opinion. Maybe if they gave evoker some synergy between spells maybe a couple of interesting procs. But as it is the single target is very very very dull.

Frost mage is strong and fun.

Frost mages are near the bottom at warcraft logs.

Tuning isnt done yet. Shadowlands had tuning up until raid launch, df will be the same.

So you just press buttons on cooldown and do more damage than most piano classes? Definitely rolling deva now!

I think you’re going to be sorely disappointed if you think your getting a better package out of devastation evoker than you’ll get out of mage.

Yup if you can count to 5 you should be able to parse quite high, even if you cant make it to 10 it will be fine.

Evoker was on the PTR? I missed that.

Also, every video I’ve watched of the Evoker show dps and healer using a mix of talents to create synergy between colors to buff spells and create synergy, while also maintaining a priority as well. And the charging system adds a nice flavor to the flow it seems like. These videos are from 3 days ago though, so pretty fresh. The Evoker looked nothing like you describe.

Oh well. I’ll see for myself tomorrow.

They accidently allowed people to make them on friday and turn it off 24 hours later. I was lucky enough to make one and test one. I havent even brought dragonflight yet either.

Yea utility is great but trust me the single target is awful. My gf who plays bm and is hyper casual abd likes easy to play specs who also played demon hunter on release, also hates it because the single target feels so bad.

You can test it in a few days hopefully you are not as disspo8nted as i was with the single target

I’ve mained this mage since 4 months after Vanilla wow was launched almost 18 years ago. For most of that time, I was arcane mainspec.

But I will be maining a Devastation Evoker in Dragonflight … NOT my mage. Why?

  • I love dragons. My first MMO, Horizons Empire of Istaria, had playable dragons and they were a lot of fun. Evokers aren’t dragons like in Horizons, but they are a lot closer than any other class in WoW.
  • Variety. I’m getting tired of mage and need a change.
  • I hate, Hate, HATE Rune of Power. Unfortunately, with the new talent system it is a required talent for EVERY mage, regardless of spec or type of content. Switching to Evoker lets me finally dump Rune of Power.

I might find that Evoker absolutely sucks. That it is unplayable for raiding. But I’m going to main it anyways no matter how badly it performs.

I don’t expect to be changing my mind. I’ve already spent a couple months playing Devastation Evoker on the Beta and I am pretty familiar with how they play.

Playing one is enough,if mages ever get to being number one or close to it but for now evoker as Mystwynd as so described very well.

 Mages think alike…

Devastation Evoker gameplay actually feels very similar to mage with the following features:

  • Lots of long casts and channels. The main single-target spell, Disintegrate, reminds me of spamming Arcane Missiles. Both are long channels that spend their cost up front.
  • Feels like half the range of the mage specs.
  • Very squishy. Like a mage without ice block or invis, but with elemental shaman self-healing.
  • Rotation is simpler and more forgiving than any of the mage specs. Good choice for those who have slower reflexes.
  • You’re even more of an immobile gun-turret than a mage. When moving, Evoker dps is almost nil. In the Beta, I typically lost 1/3 of my target dummy dps on most fights and 2/3 on the highest movement fights. Movement penalizes Evoker DPS very harshly.

Interesting. I am looking forward to trying them out in the coming days. During the downtime today I played through the DK starting experience on Classic WotLK to get that mount and I would love to see how that part of the game has improved on retail because I have to say I absolutely hated it, lmao. So much quality of life changes over the years.

Unfortunately, along with the quality of changes in recent years there was also an infusion of needless complexity in regards to gameplay. That coupled with the truly unhinged cooldown stacking burst meta are really driving me away from the game. SL is the first expansion I’ve ever quit and if something doesn’t change with Arcane or an alternative to the SL build emerges I might just move on to Evoker or make my long time primary alt Destruction Warlock my main.

I’m in a similar situation, though I think it was about 6 months in before I re-rolled, and while I dabbled in other classes over the years I always come back to the Mage as there’s always been one spec that is fun (some expansions there were 2, or even 3 specs that were fun!). I haven’t kept up with the DF stuff, but BfA and SL ruined Mages for me. Just straight up gross play styles across the board. I’m still torn on DF, as I do want to try it but I also don’t want to pay another $80 for a crap expansion and don’t care for the direction our raid team is going.

This surprises me. Wasn’t Evoker meant to be a hyper-mobile mid-range dps, more similar to DH than other casters? I wonder if I missed something, or if there’s potential for this to change. It doesn’t look good to be a super turret in current M+ or raid environments, unless you are an absolute pumper when you can stand still.

Here’s my new Evoker (Mistwynd).

Evokers ARE mobile. Between Glide and Hover, they can actually move around pretty fast.

The problem is they just do NOT do much dps while moving.

  • They generally need to stand-and-plant to deal any noticeable damage.
  • Moving often means aborting a Disintegrate channel, which means a sizeable chunk of dps is lost since the essence is wasted.
  • Hover isn’t a great solution for delivering damage while moving.
    • It can’t be cast reactively without interrupting a disintegrate cast.
    • The initial dash is far too much and can put the evoker out of position if all the evoker wanted to do was step out of bad.

I toyed with the idea, but I’m not really a fan of the empower mechanic. Evoker will be an alt for me and I’ll primarily be playing it as Preservation rather than trying to dps with it and put out good numbers. Not to say that Devastation isn’t capable of putting out good dps (I don’t really know how well it can do when played properly), only that I know I am personally not capable of putting out competitive dps with it.
