Everything about the games story sucks

You know what formula worked better?

Here is your bad guy and his little squad of goons, smash down the doors to their stronghold after you murder his goonies in their strongholds first

One random plot twist

No lame attempt at character development

If you want to attempt a story like you are now blizzard just make the game a single player game because that’s the only way it could ever run with that you’re trying to feed us

Let me sum up the crux of the story

One lady got angry and burnt down a tree because she was moody so a lame war started then after that for some unknown reason we decided we needed a navy even though the world is littered with portals and flying boats anyways
Then we go off to make friends and kill some old god for some reason and the allies have no clue why we are there
Then we cross dress into the other faction to kill our own leaders (that was the stupidest thing ever), then we smash some super fish lady who has been moody for 10,000 years after a trap I can hearthstone out of
Then our first angry lady gets angry again and smokes out for pretty much the most insane reason ever

The end that is bfa

I seriously have no idea what’s happening in the story right now. I played the game and did all the things. The writers are bad at… providing context?

you’re just mad coz your waifu left you.

also you need to learn to be able to separate things that happen in the story vs things that have to happen in game mechanics to make the game playable

The story isn’t war and peace but it’s not that bad. At this point Terrible writing! story sucks! has just become another meme used to bash Blizzard

No the story is extremely poor and it’s that bad it’s popped it’s foul head out for getting slice to ribbons by the community

This seems to be the most heavily story drive xpac in memory

And it’s not a good story

Crazy that

I think it’s several things:

  1. Chris Metzen retired, that has had a huge impact on the writing

  2. They’ve burned through all of the original lore as of the end of Legion and now have to create new threads which are left open and ambiguous for future development which hinders current story-telling

  3. They have transitioned to a more character moment driven style of storytelling which is not their forte by any means.

  4. They split the introduction to BfA across many different media, and completely misrepresented what the story was (for everyone complaining about faction war storylines, BfA did not even have one) leading to confusion and apathy in the playerbase

  5. They have strung the story along in the seasons format which is the equivalent of getting a 20 minute episode every 4 months

  6. They knew BfA was a filler expansion to get from point A to point B and the next expansion has the story they are building towards and really want to tell

I’ll be honest with you, it’s always been pretty bad. It being bad is really nothing new.

What does seem to have happened, however, is a tonal shift - it’s gone from the fun kind of bad where the writers seem to be laughing along with us at how silly this all is, to the type where the writers seem to genuinely believe they’re writing something incredible and dramatic.

Before, it was akin to watching The Room. Still bad, but fun and quotable the entire way through nontheless. I can’t say I recall much at all from the current plot, save for the admittedly fairly iconic imagery of Teldrassil burning down.

This is quite possibly the biggest reason the story feels so awkward now, to be honest.

They transitioned from telling a story about factions going at it to a character study. You cannot write a character study with 5-month breaks in-between.

Color me shocked, a classic player is still coming into the WoW threads and complaining about the game.

BfA feels like a short story spread out over a year now. I do find it interesting and all. But I do not particularly want to wait 2 years just to find out why Vol’jin chose Sylvanas (for example). I mean, the quests revolving around that don’t even offer a half an hour of gameplay total.

And why is it always an undead male rogue?

Whoops meant to post on a retail character (scallion)

The Alliance zones are the worst story I’ve ever seen

This is probably the best and most underrated post in the thread

ye the stories fine. some sub quests are personally different for the npc’s
Azeroth’s at risk were the heroes that have ta save er. as magni the speaker would say. Just follow that main story because it branches out into different areas which could potentially confuse some people.

Well if you don’t like it then quit and stick with the version of WoW you like rather than grouse about it. Sure,it’s not Shakespeare or Dickens but you need to remember the story is written akin to American comic books with a hint of warhammer inspiration so the story isn’t going to be Oscar worthy. To reiterate, if you don’t like it,then either stick with Classic or find something that DOES make you happy as some are happy with the story thus far, especially those burnt out on the repetitive, pseudo edgy red v blue crap.

Yeah I don’t think the writers were rolling on the floor having a giggle when they did cutscenes like Arthas’ defeat… they have always taken their stories serious, wasn’t like before BfA it was some sort of Wildstar storyline where we were trying to take Sylvanus down and steal her spork of power.

They are trying to keep less of the important parts out of the books and stuff and I think its a good thing.

Don’t forget some important details and character development is hidden in the books as well and never ever covered in the actual game…

I just today found an important arc for Turalyon was in one of the books rather than the game…

vile practice.

I didnt mind their little flavoring things like the pre expansion FREE comics, or the Warbringers / Warlords videos… because EVERYONE had access to that and it was part of marketing.

but to hide key events and progression in books is disgusting.

Handling of the Anduin substory during legion (ie the compass) was awesome. Still gimme chills “What do I do now?” “What a King MUST do.”
It’s an optional quest for flavor, story and character development that we can chose to follow in game or not. PERFECTLY handled.

The entire plot of say WoD leadup being in that frigging book (the trial and escape and everything). Not cool.

Ever.

A huge problem since probably MoP is that they’ve decided not to tell the entire story in your play of the game. You have to play both faction, and read all of the novels, and google the rest you’re missing to find out what’s actually happening. By trying to decentralize it, they’ve made it impossible to follow.

So, by burning down teldrassil she has wounded nzoth for him to not return in full power but had to bear the consequences of the war with the alliance because she knows the night elves will not be willing to burn down their own tree that was also giving life to nzoth.

Everything about your mom sucks
