To make leveling an alt more interesting I tried a challenge to avoid using mounts and just focus on running between locations. What I didn’t expect is how much is changed the experience and made it way more enjoyable and immersive.
It reminds me a bit of classic wow where you have the time to take in the scenery around you along with the ambience. Dragonflight and The War Within’s zones feel completely different as I was so used to flying around at heights to get between areas, you miss all the smaller details and scenery the art team added in along with the scale of each zone.
I understand some people just want to speed run to 80, but I highly recommend this if you are starting a new alt as it does make it more fun and immersive in the long run. It’s nice to be reminded there’s no rush, just take the time to enjoy the journey.
I tried it! That is how I leveled in classic because I couldn’t afford a mount LOL
It was fine, mostly I just watched youtube on my second monitor while running though which might not be the experience you had

I second this, Gig. I have leveled alts this way in the past, on foot, and my most recent 80, I stayed on foot whenever possible in Dragonflight.
The sheer size of those zones is only truly felt when playing that way.
If your character has a gathering profession, it makes this all the more enjoyable as there is something “to do” while you travel. Skinning definitely counts there, as well. Then, at the end, you sell it all and make a little coinage for starting the TWW content.

I could see myself sticking only to ground mounts but I don’t think I could go back to running. I already did my fair share of that back in vanilla.

Did this by queuing for dungeons and fishing in between got a few mounts to sell
The challenge should include no use of flight paths.
I remember my days just starting out in BC where that was the case. I much prefer being able to mount to get to where I’m going. If I want an exploration heavy game, I’ll go play some version of Elder Scrolls. The Oblivion Remaster looks really good, and they kept the old, janky mechanics. I can see myself buying it when it goes on sale for like $20.

I did the Samophlange quest in Vanilla.
That was enough to last a life time.

I’m always leveling mostly on the ground and without mounts.
The key is that I have the choice to use my dynamic mounts if I so wish.
