You can’t play Humans until you have exalted w/ Stormwind anymore, or orcs until Orgrimmar, Trolls w/ Darkspear, or Gnomes with Gnomeregan.
Until you’ve ground this rep at vanilla-era rep speed with no repeatable farm content you’re not allowed to make any of these entirely aesthetic character choices, you need to learn their story first.
The point: no part of character creation aesthetic design should require content done on a different character. Your character is the medium through which you experience content, not a reward in itself for experiencing other content. It should reflect you and your fantasy experience.
Races are part of character customization, not some trophy like a hard-earned mount or tabard and any attempt to make them a reward is lazy game design that serves only to further intimidate new players from picking up the game. Besides, not a single allied rep grind for the Alliance had anything to do with the actual races they unlocked, nor Mag’har for Horde, until the final quest. Speaking as someone who has already unlocked them all.
It’s a sham to keep us invested over a long period of time repeating content we’ve already done for weeks to keep them in business.
Lazy.
Game.
Design.
To those who flagged my post as trolling: thanks. Now someone from Blizzard will HAVE to read it. The satirical point stands that nobody logs on for the first time knowing their race’s story - they learn it as that character through fun and engaging play, and then they level up and earn rewards to further customize and stand apart that character. Their race and initial design, however, should never be the reward in and of itself. It is counter-intuitive to fantasy play and I will not back down or retract that point.
Obligatory post on an allied race as OP to show this post is not coming from a place of bias as someone who doesn’t have the rep, but from someone who has done it and found it an utterly insulting waste of my time.
The time is takes is not the point whatsoever. The fact that something that should be a fun and creative process is turned into a chore that takes any amount of time on a less desirable character is a weakness to the game, even if it only took a few hours.
Not quite sure what you are talking about, but I’m probably looking at it from the perspective of someone who got all the original factions to Exalted years ago, back when the grinding was real.
If you want heirloom gear on a race, you have to do required rep. Its not an essential part of gameplay, is purely aesthetics. Don’t want it, don’t do it. Did I just say that??? Thing is, it really is purely appearance. Its like having to do a raid over and over to get a certain piece of mog gear to drop. Its. a. choice.
Sorry to be such a downer…
However: if you are talking about allied races. I agree. It’s a pest.
It is kind of a bummer to grind to unlock the allied races, that being said, they aren’t really true separate races. Besides maybe Nightborne, they are all just a variation on an existing race.
What armor you equip is something that is obviously earned, and also interchangeable every time you log on. Again, your character is the literal biggest part of the game. No new player should come to wow and be told they have to play 60+ hours on a new toon getting to 110/120 and then rep farming for 3 weeks to play the race that most appeals to them.
How did you get exalted?? Let me guess, by playing a tauren that, had vanilla used the same garbage system for race unlocks, you wouldn’t have even been able to play?
If I had said that race was a very important factor in character creation and we shouldn’t rep lock taurens pre-BFA, that would generally be understood and agreed upon. SOme new races come out, and suddenly that’s different?
No. We shouldn’t be farming for any character-creation aesthetic choices.
I thought hey, I will take my time, maybe 6 months, grind out 7th Legion slowly and level a Dark Iron for the heritage. That will give me a long term goal! I had both the rep and the heritage in a month. Sigh, just stop.
Then it takes 1 month, after that it takes 2 months and so on. Eventually they’ll have a boosts in the game store specifically for grinding reputation.
AAA publishers/developers are like a pack of hyenas nibbling away at their players with all kinds of monetization schemes.
Nightborne are just a variation on an existing race, as well.
And OP, they’re just reskins of existing races. You can’t compare some recolors/reskins to the base races. They’re not the same at all.
And I, too, am getting tired of rehashing the same tired, old topic because people can’t be bothered to just play the game and get the reps. We’ve always wanted reps for other reasons. Mounts, pets, toys, etc. But suddenly because a recolor of something different happens to be attached to it the sky is falling.
