There have been 3 (technically 4?) iterations of Darkshore, and I can honestly say this is one of my favorite zones in WoW.
The Classic version of Darkshore is gloomy and mysterious, and is probably one of the best zones to level in on Alliance, due to quest density, and most quest being quick and easy.
The Cataclysm version of Darkshore unfortunately destroys Auberdine, but you get to see some of the better lore from Cataclysm, with Malfurion and Azshara cameos.
The BFA versions of Darkshore are imo the end result of story telling over years. Ever since Wrath, in the books and in game, the Horde had been slowly pushing through Ashenvale into Darkshore, and BFA is just the end result.
I never liked Darkshore, I don’t know why. When questing it was a nice change from Teldrasil (spelling?), but The first NE zone I really enjoyed was Ashenvale.
Most of the Night Elf zones seem to have memorable questing for me.
They also had nice progression from Classic - Cataclysm compared to most other zones, imo.

That is definitely true. There seemed to be an almost logical progression with the Orcs pushing deeper into Ashenvale and Stone Talon from the Barrens
Well, for me, its because its long and strung out with a lot of running back and forth, and unlike the OP, i always thought the quest density was far, far too low.
Plus the terrible swimming sections at a level with none of the tools for making that slightly less worse.
I’d vote for it as one of the worst zones, with no theme or cohesion.
