Kinda sad really.
The competition for infections is not what it used to be.
I stopped using Norton because it slows my system to a crawl and same goes for the free stuff and other paid services.
I am typing this in just a chance if anyone is using anything new that I am not aware of.
Windows Defender is pretty incredible, and all anyone should ever actually need or use.
Mehhh Defender is ok but I was there the first week Comboxfix came out and Daaang all the hidden stuff it found was amazing and shocking. I would pay the combofix guy lots of money if he made a windows 11 version
I only use it for virus removal, but I haven’t had to do that on anyone’s PC in over 10 years. Usually, for removing garbage, O&OSU and its ilk are fine enough.
Windows Defender is actually pretty good. It does about as much as you can ask of a good Anti-Malware/Anti-Virus. On the flip-side, most 3rd party anti-virus has become very scummy and scammy. Everything about 3rd party anti-virus these days revolves around trying to scare you into paying a subscription. The 3rd-party AV will find lots of things when it scans your PC and make them sound dangerous when in reality most of what it will find will be completely irrelevant, like browser cookies.
Modern 3rd party anti-virus now in many ways resembles the malware that people were originally trying to remove. Meanwhile most actual modern malware has become sophisticated enough that there isn’t much an anti-virus can do anymore. You just have to be smart enough to not click on the link in the strange email, etc.
