Something that came to mind as I did the world quest collecting plushies and other artifacts in the remains of Dalaran is that while the city was destroyed, this wasn’t the first time it was wiped off the map. Warcraft III saw Dalaran get destroyed, then vanilla WoW had a bunch of quests for the undead that involved harassing Dalaran mages and defenders around the walled off ruins. So I don’t think rebuidling Dalaran yet again would be that outlandish, especially since so many survived its destruction. Here’s an idea for how to do it:
Rebuilding Dalaran
This world event would be done in a couple of stages.
Stage 1 would focus on securing the location where the rebuilding will take place using world quests, along with material collection via dailies for all professions (crafting and gathering).
Stage 2 would focus on protecting the construction site from enemies looking to disturb things through regular and boss-level world quests (troggs, nerubians, the giant robots that come from the sea). Crafters would be ordered (via dailies) to build unique items for the construction effort. For example:
- Blacksmiths getting temporary recipes for doorknobs and hinges
- Jewelcrafters getting temp recipes for fixtures and other shiny decorations
- Enchanters getting temp recipes for arcane foci
- Leatherworkers would get temp recipes for furniture
Gatherers would be tasked (via dailies) with acquiring unique items. For example:
- Miners would be ordered to quarry stones for building.
- Skinners would be ordered to find specific pelts for tool-making and other uses
- Herbalists would be tasked with finding specific quest herbs, seeds, and landscaping materials
Stage 3 would see even more threats to the construction site. More materials/temporary crafts would be added to the quest selection for crafters and gatherers.
Stage 4 would be the end-goal along with maybe a cutscene of the city powering up and taking to the skies again.
Rewards
Dailies and world quests would reward crests, Resonance Crystals, and a unique currency for the event that can be used to buy transmogs. The top contributors could also maybe get their names on a memorial plaque or something. If we want to go really crazy, rebuilding Dalaran could be used to introduce player housing in the form of a customizable apartment or phased house in the city.
Granted, I wouldn’t expect this to take place over the course of a patch cycle. I’d expect it to take a couple of patches, if not a full expansion, to see this happen. Anyway, that’s all I got.
