Could always say that she was under partial control from the jailer this whole time and the process was an intermediate step between Arthas and Anduin, and for whatever reason she had to pretend her bad actions were always under her own volition this whole time.

That would both be a cop out, and make Sylvanas look weak as a kitten. Not to mention they would have to retcon cinematics that happened in this very expansion. Very hard pass on that.

It seems the opposite is being indicated, and that in the raid she will be “answering” for her crimes. As they themselves state in the interview:

Blizzard and nuanced

I’m, cautiously hopeful. I really had completely written off Maldraxxus. They were undead, described as not strictly evil, and Necrolord was literally my edgelordy username when I was 10. I thought it was going to be embarrassing try hard trash after I’d seen their definition of ‘morally gray’.

And I absolutely love Maldraxxus. It’s a death metal album but it’s got real heart. Moriaz finding Buttons is the most adorable damn thing. He’s so happy to see her.

So we’ll see. Personally pretty interested to hear the whole Broker city is there. They appear to be the afterlife for second hand car salesmen and I’m here for it. I thought it was just going to be a big dungeon.

I have a feeling that this is a misinterpretation, because the screenshot shows them in the new dungeon. It’s called “Broker Cantina” in their press materials:

ANY kind of ‘redemption’ for Sylvanas is unwarranted.

It’s an asspull at literally the last second of her arc completing after 20 years of her acting completely opposite of what they suddenly started doing in 9.0.

I don’t care what kind of ‘nuance’ they pretend they are going to write (They won’t, they simply can’t write nuance, 16 years of WoW has shown that), its ultimately going to be forgiveness either through death or saving Anduin.

I mean its just them redoing the story of the Lich King and Arthas but with the Jailer and Anduin without literally any build up or set up or development because the writers are upset that Wrath wrapped up Arthas and the Lich King and they couldn’t use them.

I don’t think Anduin is in the nu-Arthas position, but rather in Sylvanas’s instead. He’s obviously got the look down pat but now it’s this icky reversal situation where Sylvanas has effectively subjugated “Arthas” instead. The only things he’s really missing are an actual death, and being forced to kill his own people instead of stabbing angels.

Alternativley, Calia gets turned into a “proper” Banshee by Anduthas and that’s what causes him to snap out of it.

Since Sylvanas being soul-twisted was Arthas’s “first time” doing so.

This is the first time we’re showing what Sylvanas true motivations are, and players will have a better understanding of why she did what she did, but that doesn’t excuse her.

So that confirms that nobody is going to be happy with what they do with her. She’s still awful, so the people who didn’t want that are out of luck. But they’ll try to make it so that she’s kinda-sorta not totally awful, which will only frustrate and infuriate the ones who were looking forward to the ultimate satisfying beatdown.

I mean, we knew nobody was going to be happy, but it’s kind of depressing to have it confirmed. Why did they have to ruin a perfectly good character like this?

Yeah, that’s how I’ve been reading it ever since the previous cutscene where Sylvanas is literally posing as Arthas with the runeblade. Now she’s become her own abuser and Anduin is the new Sylvanas, since he’s apparently conscious of his own actions but not actually under his own control when he’s being made to stab Kyrestia.

That’s why I found it a little confusing when people have been saying he’s the next Arthas instead.
