The souls are only granted if you delivered the final blow and if you haven’t killed anyone within a few seconds. Then you will get 1 soul. If you AOE down groups of mobs, you will only get 1 soul. This makes it borderline impossible to get the transmog from this pet. After countless hours of playing, I have just reached 200 souls.
