A good ret can outdps a frost mage.
Is that a high bar? No
Is it near the bottom by naxx? Yes
Is it okay for MC-AQ? Yes
With debuff slots free, having a ret keep up wisdom while doing 600-700dps is fine. Up to 800 in Naxx.

Up to 1200 in naxx if you get all the buffs, use all the consumes and gear to the 9’s.
They’re not carrying the world; feral is also very good, and Prot pala does have its uses.
I mean, very very few guilds will give a ret naxx loot.

Progression guilds tend to clear and Quit.
Speed clear guilds only run hyper optimal comps.
But GDKP guilds expect results but allow loot to go to the highest bidder.
To gear Ret, you simply GDKP playing Holy and gear up full T3 then start buying the Plate and offset you need. Further you can then fund the expedition of many alts.
No Good reason why Ret pala can’t be geared in Vanilla.
2.5, sulfuras, quick strike, onslaught girdle, the leather sartura gloves, plenty of ret gear right there. No reason to get the naxx plate gear imo. If anything you could try to get a kiss instead of the bwl trinket.
Bro I averaged 200-400dps with end game gear as an pally and if I could get 600 on a boss fight (that wasn’t undead) it would be PUMPING.
Best DPS could do as a pally was AOE packs in abom wing that could swing between 1-2k dps with all the crits.
I just don’t think that kind of damage is happening in wow classic

My guy, then you already get why so many (myself included) are vehemetly against blizzard making changes to this game.
They NEVER do anything minor - they always, and I’m being serious here, ALWAYS, go mad scientist making changes all across the board. Cause the minute they do one thing for one class, all the other classes start screming, so they make changes there, but it’s blizzard, so the changes cause more issues, and on and on you go.
So here you are:

Correct, also some of the AQ offset leather, and actually there is quite a lot of leather / mail with really good stats for damage.
This is something I think blizzard really messed up on… Leather should have always been the king of output stats while mail was a compromise for PvP Arms / Ret / Enhance, while Plate should have been hyper survivability.
To crown this off also make bosses hit 150% harder per swing to ensure plate is required.
Tho, some sets would need reallocation, such as warriors / pala / R10 /R14.
I would also move hunters to leather full time removing mail armor from their options., and move all caster gear to cloth only; no more spell damage leather. Healing could remain on certain leather / mail…
Tho this is all too much changes requiring a full on rebalanced game.
You can deal damage, just not a lot of damage.
So technically it’s not a lie.
