(ERA) Do you miss vanilla wow? Wondering where to play? Check out these small realm communities!

Are you feeling adrift in the current vanilla wow landscape? Maybe you are thinking about trying out classic era wow for the very first time but have no idea where to start? Are you sick of the megaclusters like on Anniversary or Whitemane?

Might I recommend checking out one of the smaller realms? On the classic era client there are still several standalone server realms and some of them are working on building up a community. Playing on a small realm is a unique way to experience the game and while it inherently comes with many challenges, those same challenging aspects end up being the things that keep people around for years and years…

Don’t expect active auction houses or people spamming LFG chats, almost all trading and dungeoneering groups are coordinated thought Discord or in guild chat, as most of these realms will just have a single guild running the whole show on a given faction.

Tell us about your realm! I’m going to list as many as I know about here in the OP.

Faerlina - PVP
Elusive Ops of Azeroth is an ambitious Alliance guild who have just downed Kazzak after just a couple short months of getting back to raiding. They are currently running ZG and Azzy kills and would love to push farther into more content. Last summer they managed to get through Firemaw in BWL, so they’re hungry to get back in there for more! They also love to host fun community events like RP outfit contests and friendly arena battles. If an Alliance PVP faction sounds like a fun time please check them out!

Bloodsail Buccaneers - RP (PVE)
Marooned (Alliance) are a very social and extremely friendly group of gamers who have been raiding more and more the past few months. They are currently clearing MC on a weekly basis and trying to push there way into BWL. Another couple players is all it would take to get them past those pesky DPS checks at the start of the dungeon. If being in a socially-focused guild who take things easy and keep the pace noob-friendly, then please come check out BSB Alliance and say hi to any Marooned you see online with /who! There are also a few peeps still keeping unofficial HC alive on BSB, and I’m sure they would love some company from anyone who might be familiar with the old BSB HC scene.

Deviate Delight - RP-PVP
After the release of Anniversary realms, the DD “fresh” movement has all but evaporated. Those who stayed behind are the Remnant - a horde guild who started with just 7 raiders doing weekly UBRS clears and, after a few short months of building the server back up, just took down Majordomo in MC! This guild is full of somewhat quiet, but dedicated and generous gamers who value a “self-found” style of gameplay, while freely helping out new players and creating a welcoming atmosphere. If you are looking to hop into classic era WoW and would like a slower paced and more fresh-friendly raid prog group, then the DD horde would love to meet you!

Kromcrush - PVP
After a 2 year hiatus, the Bananas guild have returned as the Krom Krusaders!!! This horde guild is very PVP-focused and are currently raiding in UBRS, but they would love to start working on Azzy and ZG in the coming weeks! They are also currently building up a core dungeoneering team by doing BG weekends and earning all that sweet class armor. If you want to experience the power of teamwork and are looking to get in on the ground floor of a new horde effort then this is a great cluster to check out. The Krusade would love to have an alliance enemy guild to compete with in the open world… if any Alliance players are up for the challenge

Grobbulus - RP-PVP
Grobbulus is the ultimate example of how a small-realm community can succeed. Legacy needs no introduction on these forums, thanks to Jarl, but for those who don’t know, they are a very experienced Alliance guild who turned an almost empty faction into a naxx-clearing powerhouse. Legacy have also used the HC transfer feature to break faction locks and start a Horde side guild called The Exiled, who collaborate raids with the long standing horde guild Requiem. Both factions are currently raiding mostly in MC and 20mans with reduced numbers, but Legacy are planning to push back into Naxx after Labor day. If you are looking for a cross-faction community who like experiencing the game from both perspectives then you will definitely find a home on Grobb. Tell them The Mayor sent you.

I would love to hear about more realms who are building that WoW dreamhome. I will do my best to update the list with any other guild who want to join in the chorus of vanilla WoW fans that are keeping the game alive!

NOW is the time to return to era. With SoD ending and the immanent transition of Anniversary servers to TBC, classic players may be feeling a bit “aimless” in the coming months or maybe just looking for something a little bit different. Instead of going straight to one of the merged megaclusters, please consider checking out these communities. The people are there for the love of the game - and those are the best kind of gamer!

Shameless Grobb horde bump. A few more active raiders and we could be clearing BWL again!! Join the Requiem ranks! And slay some dragons!

Hey! I’m both one of those (relatively) OG Bloodsail HC’ers and I’m also leveling a normal alt in Marooned.

Bloodsail is almost entirely empty while leveling which makes it perfect for true SSF HC, like we did before the official servers. There frankly is not a sufficient HC population on the server to run HC dungeons atm, so it’s really REALLY SSF.

But this emptiness is also perfect for anyone playing normally who prefers solo leveling with just a touch of social interaction here and there. All quest mobs, resources, and rares are up almost 24/7. If you want group content, join Marooned! They’re super nice and help each other out all the time with random farming and whatnot. The GM whispered another leveling alt of mine once (not even in the guild) to ask if I wanted these green bracers or something, then also just sent me a blue BOE weapon as well.

TL;DR: I have nothing but good words for the (very small) population on Bloodsail, Marooned has great oldschool guild vibes.

Thanks for putting this together and sharing so much info about these classic communities!

I’m currently on Deviate Delight with (Horde). I joined the guild back in December and it’s been nothing but good times as the community has grown and our raid success has climbed. We’re very welcoming to new players and look forward to seeing new faces on the server. Thanks again for the spotlight Skater!

Beautiful post about a great side of the game. Thanks, Skater! I’m also on DD with Remnant, and it’s been a great community to play and progress with the last several months.

Yeah I missed Era, currently on Whitemane but might venture over to Mankrik, I’ve heard awesome things about the community over there, can’t wait until Anniversary is over and people transfer back to Era to get it popping again.

Just to give some more info about the Alliance guild on BSB.

Raiding since Dec 2024, we clear Kazzak, Azure, ZG, AQ 20, and MC. We have yet to hit 30 in a raid and yesterday’s full MC clear was with 20 people as August is always the slowest month. Our raiding group is around 30 people but there’s always a few missing because of work/family. We just got our first legendary with the Hand of Rag!

We aren’t stacking warriors, often bring 2 boomies in our 20-25 man MCs, and have a fair amount of new-to-WoW, new to Classic raiding, or 60-70+ aged players. We’re also fortunate to have some very skilled/knowledgeable players that paved the way and carry while we geared others and progressed. All to say, we’re a very mixed bunch.

There are 2 small guilds that raid with us with a few dedicated players that we consider part of our core (RP guild) and (smaller and similarly community focused). If you want to dabble in RP but raid, our server offers that.

The guild is committed to enjoying Classic and meaningful progression with the community we’ve built. It’s got a more original feeling where players can play what they enjoy. Playing with a smaller crew takes a lot of PATIENCE…progression is slow and if you don’t put in the effort to help and get to know others this server won’t work out for you.

Loot has been generally free roll with a mix of some loot council/reserves to create a level of fairness and ensure we prioritize the roles/players that will help us get to the next level. New raiders gear up quickly. New priest yesterday (that we attuned during the raid as he logged on late) came in for the last 4 bosses of MC and walked out with Benediction and a ring from Rag. One of our most committed warriors that puts in the work was rewarded with the Onslaught Girdle when it dropped as he comes weekly and we want gear being spread. We’ve found a lot of success with this system as it prioritizes the good of the guild rather than RNG.

We love it here. Discord is active and people have grown real friendships here. Feel free to message me, Ern/Ernheals/Phrygia, anytime I’m on with your questions.

Not even a little.

Boring overrated game.

Target dummy raids that offer no challenge.

Terrible class balancing.

Imagine posting this with 7,000 forum posts, from your Nightslayer WoW Classic 20th Anniversary gnome… couldn’t be me.

For those that enjoy games, more than forum trolling… era continues to be a great place. Slow pace, not going anywhere, not min/maxing, chasing the hype… it’s just pure WoW joy if that’s your thing.

And if it’s not your thing, like Drinkblink, or eastcoast, or the others… well that’s all good too, there’s like 30 other flavors you can continue to enjoy.

We’re happy to have anyone over on Grobbulus that wants to play the slow/long game, community/fun focused. I’m also stoked to see so many other micro communities here in Era <3

play mankrik :expressionless: it’s a vibrant community imo. and you don’t have to worry about bored naxx geared 60s ganking you which is sadly a problem on whitemane. i’ve been hopping around a lot of mankrik guilds and they’re all lively and fun in their own unique ways.

That’s Temu Glinda they post inflammatory and argumentative things for attention.

I enjoy the love triangle between Drink/Ripsod/Frost. It makes for a fun read sometimes.

If you love 5 man dungeons, a smaller community would more than likely produce better outcomes in terms of engagement.

On a personal note, few things WoW ring that nostalgia bell for me like UBRS being “a big deal”.

Keep up the great work guys!

We can’t dishonor Glinda in death like that… Drinkblink doesn’t deserve such an honor to be Glinda

That’s why they’re Temu Glinda.
A cheap imitation of the real thing.
