Enough with rare mob + rare drop combo

I can handle killing a special mob that has a low chance to drop a mount or pet. Think farming old raids for bosses that only have a 1% chance to drop a mount. Sure, it’s a low chance, but you get into the raid, are actively killing mobs, getting transmogs, earning some gold, and eventually you’re likely to get the mount. This is reasonably acceptable gameplay for a cosmetic reward. Another example is how “rares” were handled in Darkshore / Arathi patrols. Respawn times were short, and you could fly your loop and be done with it.

But when you add a rare drop chance to a rare mob, how is this compelling? Where is the fun in sitting by a spawn point for 30-120 minutes in the hopes of getting an item that drops 1-2% of the time? In what possible universe is this fun? There’s no gameplay involved at all. You are literally sitting and waiting for extensive amounts of time for something that is unlikely to drop regardless. You could spend dozens of hours going after a single cosmetic.

And they did this with SO MANY 8.3 MOUNTS AND PETS. Want the cosmetics in this patch? Be prepared to sit on your butt at a spawn point forever, over and over again. At least the Darkshore / Arathi loop was somewhat engaging. Clearing old raids is somewhat interesting. Sitting and staring at a spawn point is just INCREDIBLY boring.

I’m willing to spend time trying to get these cosmetics. I know they aren’t crucial to the game, and it’s my choice to spend time trying to get them. But is it too much to ask for a little bit of gameplay beyond “sit and wait for an hour for a 2% drop chance”? Implement some system that makes rare mobs spawn faster! Maybe I have to kill waves of hyenas, and at the end of 20 minutes of hyena waves, I know the mob will spawn. ANYTHING! But PLEASE stop with “we’ll put in a bunch of rare mobs on 1 hour spawn timers with 2% drop chance”. It’s lazy and not fun.

Its all a matter of playtime, Blizzard needs more playhours invested in the game for their quarterly reports. The problem blizzard has is that finally, the players are pushing back against some of the more unreasonable requirements. To be fair, there has to be some level of randomness in an RPG, its simply part of the genre (blame DnD treasure rolls).

idk wow classic is doing well, maybe every gear and item in shadowlands should be the same drop rate as bfa mounts, that will fix the economy.

I can understand the frustration.

My daily routine consists of…

Mechagon: Rustfeather, Vaultbot, Harvester. I have to do that as WM so I can do the Prototype quest as well, which that and the daily equals enough parts/crates to make a vaultbot key so I can jump in the future version, otherwise that’d likely be an extra hour camping in present time.
Uldum: Rotfeaster, Corpse Eater, Lord Aj’qirai, Grand Executor depending on phase.
Vale: Ahn-De the Loyal, Ha-Li, Houndlord Ren, Rei Lun depending on phase.
Nazjatar: Soundless

That list was longer of course, but over time it does get shorter and shorter thankfully, by the great glorious hand of RNG.

Once those daily camps are done, then I feel like I can actually play the game. Such is the life of a collector I suppose. I’m sure this system looks great on Blizzard’s financial records but it certainly does get tiring.

You have more patience than me, friend. I like to collect, but just do not have the patience to wait on the excessive spawn times of all those mobs for a minuscule chance at a drop. It’s just a blatant waste of time. Can’t they at least make these grinds have some minor level of gameplay involved that isn’t just sitting and staring?
