Engineering: To Gnome or Goblin?

Reading and researching it looks like most engineers go with goblin these days…I had so much fun with the gnome stuff in vanilla…am I missing something, isn’t goblin mostly bombs?

Get a buddy that has goblin and go gnomish for the fun toys. You can have your friend make the good bombs for you and you can still use them.

I believe by 1.12 you could both with out having to completely relearn engineering.

The Soothsaying Book. I believe that was in back then.

You could do as someone else said and make a Goblin friend but sometimes you just like to do things yourself with out waiting on others.

You could go Gnomish and make all the BoPs like chicken, death ray, mind control cap etc. use the book and then take up Goblin and just make your own bombs and nades and land mines

iirc: Whichever school you choose, you are forever locked out of the other. I took that to mean even relearning the profession wouldn’t allow you to switch.

Unlearning a profession allows you to train a new specialization.
Soothsaying for dummies also allows you to change specializations but I don’t remember if they allowed it for engineers in vanilla or if it was TBC.

Toys, toys, and more toys. Da boomers were mostly for interrupts anyway.

IIRC, this didn’t work for all professions. It did work for Engineering though.

There was also a book (“Evil Soothsaying for Dummies”) that let you switch, but I don’t think that was introduced until later.

In tanaris, pre-cata, it was called soothsaying for dummies. It was available at some point in vanilla but I can’t remember if it allowed you to change engineering spec or not.

At one point it did, but I’m not sure when.

The old threads I’m reading indicate that in vanilla, the only way to switch was to drop the whole profession and re-level it.

It worked in TBC as I used it to change my engineering spec. It wasn’t added til 1.11 and few people knew about it so it’s really hard to find any info on it pre-tbc.

This is something I need to research as well to make sure.

My plan was to go Gnomish, as the last I heard most of the Goblin stuff can be traded/sold where Gnomish cannot. Something like that.

Both specs have BoP and BoE items

you can use https://classic.wowhead.com/engineering
Look at the skill one the right side and it’ll tell you if you need a certain spec. It looks like goblin engy is the only spec that has bombs specific to it and those don’t bind.

As melee you want to go gnome for the battle chicken haste and ray. Casters don’t really need that stuff so you can just go goblin for convenience. Of course if you want to be a tryhard and go gnome to boost melee in your group with battle chickens as a mage or something and then go goblin, you can do so. In fact this is a relatively common tactic on pservers.

Everyone wants sappers so it’s a matter of whether you start or end with goblin engineering really. Of course you could buy sappers on the auction but they aren’t sold much, when they are, they are gouged in price. I suppose you could get the mats and have a guildmate make them for you but that sounds like more trouble than just switching to goblin, ya know?

This is the best answer. Upvote to oblivion, make it a sticky.

Definitely get the Gnome BOPs and then switch to Goblin. Best of both worlds.

You gotta go goblin then gnomish. The death ray requires you to be gnomish to use them where as you can use the rockethelm and sappers even if you arent goblin. Goblin only get some bombs and a crappy trinket that can only be used by them.

What you do is, Go gnome and get all the trinkets you want…

Then switch to Goblin… You can still use them.

The gnomish death ray doesn’t even require you to be an engineer.

Oh lol, what the hell am i thinking of

The only thing I can even find that requires a specific engineering to use are the teleporters and the world enlarger.

Jumper Cables in Goblin were a lot more reliable from what I remember. Pretty useful if you’re one of the many classes that doesn’t have a revive.
