If you choose Goblin or Gnomish engineering, are you stuck forever with that specialization even if you abandon the profession?
There’s contradicting information on both wowhead and youtube videos regarding whether or not your character is stuck with whichever specialization you pick.
At one point in classic I know you were stuck with whatever you picked, but it’s been so many years that I can’t remember when it changed, but I suspect it was in a later expansion like Wrath.
I tried to open a blizzard ticket to get an answer, but of course they won’t confirm one way or another.
Google could’ve answered this.
But if you go gnomeish and make your items you have to drop your whole skill set. Then re-level engineering and pick Goblin if you want the bombs. You can still use your gnomeish gadgets.
Google did not answer this and there were too many contradicting answers from comments and posts. Needless to say the short answer is you can’t switch from gnomish to goblin Engineering in Classic even if you abandon the profession.
One of my guild members tried a few days ago and ended up wasting a lot of gold only to find out he was stuck with the original specialization he chose.

This isnt the case. I lvled up to 260 engineering went gnomish and made all the toys, then abandoned entirely and lvld up again, at this point you have to go to steamwheedle port and in a hut off to the left as you approach is a book titled “soothsaying for dummies” reading this book at this point will allow you to switch at no gold cost. Still cant get my goblin membership card but could learn all the patterns.
This might not be 100% true. There might be a weird interaction with the 14 day membership card or whatever. Has anyone tried swapping AFTER that has ended? as in unlearned engineering after its time for u to renew ur membership card?
No, i pretty much swapped within the day.
Do u have to be the correct spec to use the items or just to craft them? I forget
isnt there a quest to swap to the other or was that added later
Iscariah is correct, I abandoned engineering, leveled it to 225, headed to the hut in tanaris and I was able to swap from Gnomish to Goblin engineering.
