For engineering, the +1 and rare +3 profession items used to be found in Disturbed Dirt and Explorer Bags around Dragonlands. At some point, they stopped being available here and only drop rarely from it seems construct mobs. Anyone have a good farm location for these? Around Halls of Infusion for example the drop rate is pretty pathetic killing the elites, maidens, and defense orbs.
For mining I can clear my quota of mining bonus items pretty quickly just passively mining a bit as I go about my business. For Engineering, it’s been a long time since I can routinely collect more than 1 or 2 +1’s a week.
You get 2 +1 items a week from disturbed dirt treasures etc.
In terms of +1 drops from mobs there are 2 you can get each week - one drops from rebel bruisers in Thaldraxus (or the other ‘rebel’ mobs) - the other as you point out drops from mobs around halls of infusion entrance - I usually farm the titan defense matrix as they are easy to kill. It can sometimes take 10-20 kills but usually less. The +3 profession treasures are a once only find - there were a lot for engineering in the cavern.
There is also the voice box item to use in the reach that summons a rare with a +1 item in its loot table once a week. All in all, 2 KPs for the trainer q, 2 KPs from the consortium, 2 KPs from the various NPCs near the WOs place, 2 Kps from dirt/treasures and 3 from mobs. 11 KPs total per week. Then it is dragon shards.
There’s also the draconic treatise from inscription, so 12 per week. It’s 3 less than most crafting professions (same as alchemy though), but there are 21 or so engi points available from treasures in Zaralek.
I am close enough to being done in some professions now that I’m wondering what, if anything, Blizz will do about surplus points. I’ve seen comments from some gatherers that they’re already sitting on many surplus points.
