Is engineering really a must have if your hardcore pvper? I play as holy paladin so is it really going to be that bad if i decide not to use it as a healer? Whats all that good about the engineering besides the grenades in pvp.
There are a lot of nice flavor items that can and will come in handy.

Mind Control Cap
Death Ray
Spell Reflectors
Paladin has Blessing of Sacrifice. This makes you virtually immune to Grenades, Gouge, Blind, Poly, Seduce, Freezing trap, Sap, Warrior (secondary target fear), and any other break on damage CC I did not list.
This assumes you’re wise enough to keep sac on a target that’s taking damage from for example a DoT on a warrior you’re healing in PVP.
Grenades (for a paladin healer) are very handy because you don’t have repentance buuuuuuuuuut I don’t know if they DR your Hammer of Justice.
As I remember they do, but this is Classic wow where all the CC DR’s are a mess and from what I have read Grenades are DR’n both Stun and another CC DR so that could be a problem in team play.
IMO Alchemy is also a very strong contender in PVP, but it’s also expensive…
You’ll be fine without it.
The PVP meta isn’t about fair fights. It’s about unfair fights.
IF you play with a premade you seek out non premades in bg’s. You don’t waste time on long matches with equal teams. Plenty of rando’s will not be engineers or using pots every minute.

Nothing is mandatory. IMO, meta-gaming makes games less fun.
The toon I’m posting on now is a tailor/enchanter. Why? Because I felt like it! I like to make bags for all of my alts (and enchanting gives me a great tanking trinket.)
My pally is a blacksmith/miner. Why? Well, that’s what I wanted to do. I’m also leveling him as prot, with intent to respec ret after I get the gear I want from dungeons. Am I going for the BiS stuff according to the guides? Nope! Pallies shouldn’t wear rogue leathers. They should wear plate with + int because they cast spells!
In the end, I play how I want. Everyone else should too.
Yes it’s a must have if you don’t want to be disadvantaged.

If you want to get rank 14… ya its mandatory. You need every advantage you can get to be the #1 spot.
If you want to get high up in rank but not past say rank 11, no its not mandatory.
Also other devices are amazing from engineering, like the trinkets such as the net one, deathray etc.
