Engineering - Drop It!?

I’ve been leveling engineering on an alt trying to sell crafts for profit. The problem: So far, I am down over 100k gold and the sales only amounted to less than 10k. I am now at Outland 73/75 and it appears gold by the tens of thousands will have to be spent to unlock the final set of recipes. Oh, and there is ONLY 7 more expansions to go as well!
At this point, I am just tempted to drop engineering and pick up herbalism instead. Mining + Herbs has always been standard on all of my characters. Crafting is just losing crap tons of gold. Do any of you bother with engineering? Seems fun until…well, Sadgati is losing patience with Nafi’s engineering hobby… LOL

You don’t have to progress professions by expansion before moving to the next anymore. I don’t remember when they changed that but it’s been like a decade if not more. I only say this because you seem to think you have 7 expansions to go. As for if you should drop it I have no idea.

The purpose of leveling the expansions is to have crafted items to sell. Having all the recipes unlocked is sort of a prerequisite. Otherwise, there will not be enough craft to hustle.

Engineering is an expensive profession, and there aren’t tons of ways to turn it around for profit. Sure, the mounts and toys exist, but margins are thin.

I don’t know much about the market for crafted/tmog from past expansions but it sounds pretty niche. Plus, sourcing materials from those expansions has to be either a massive expense or headache.

These two things together will not result favorably for your bank account. I recommend you drop engineering unless you want to keep it for the cool stuff it makes, and instead sell the ore you mine as your method of making money, which is perfectly legitimate and profitable as there is no operating expense to mining other than time.

I’m thinking the same thing. Just eat the 100,000 gold and cut the losses now. At this burn rate, 3 million plus (all gold currency in warbank) can go FAST.

I’m an engineer, I think trying to level old engineering tiers to make money is a bust unless you have something rare or know something I don’t. It’s always been a money loss profession.

I haven’t done a lot with TWW engineering but they added some PVE gear (bracers) you can craft that helped me earn some decent dollary doos in DF. They also started giving engineers more desirable toys/pets you can craft for other people that has helped.

Otherwise, engineering I just like because it comes with some quality of life perks I like too much.

This. Speed boosts and wormholes are just too good.

Alchemy is considered the most attractive trade skill. Engineering is toward the bottom. With Inscription.

I always liked the alchemy casting animation because back in vanilla the N64 graphics I thought female undead looked like they were trying to untangle two yarn balls or smash them together.

Yeah I might be totally broke but I can teleport to Toshley’s Station, I’d like to see an Enchanter do that

No one profs engineering to make gold. What a wacky notion.

Most engineers I know don’t do it for the money, they do it for the shinies. They’re very aware it’s a net loss but aforementioned wormholes and other things are extremely convenient.

Engineering’s been right rubbish for a few expansions now…they save all the amazing mechanical flavor gear for Recruit-a-Friend

you can’t make money on old expac crafting tbh. if you want to make money, hit max level, wait for next patch, and go alchemy/herbalism. that’s the only profession that rly profits most of the time.

tbh if you wanna be giga-lazy, just go herbalism and let the other alchemists handle it.

I can make decent gold off Sky Golems if I am able to hyperfocus for a month or so.

In my opinion engineering is great for mages - between portals and crafted Dimensional Rippers, there’s just about nowhere that you can’t get to in short order.

Also, the precipitation and environmental emulators are an RP boon. I don’t know if they make money on the AH on RP servers but I use them often in group RP.
