One of my engineers (Jaruce–the one I’m using as avatar for this post) is unable to learn dropped recipes picked up in dungeons. He has three recipes in his bags, but when I click on them to learn them, I get the message “You can’t use that item.”
Otherwise, Jaruce is able to do all the normal functions of an engineer: Make products, learn new recipes from trainers or vendors, etc. He just can’t seem to learn dropped recipes specifically.
I have another engineer (Batumi) trained to the same level, and he IS able to learn the same dropped recipes. So the problem is only peculiar to Jaruce specifically. He has been stuck this way for a few days at least, maybe longer.
You might need to learn a higher level of Engineering for them or may be for a Expansions segment of the Profession you haven’t learned if you skipped it.

The schematics in question are Vanilla recipes: They were all looted from Blackrock Depths, a Vanilla dungeon. Jaruce should be able to learn them: He is trained up to 296/300 at the Vanilla level.
The recipes are:
Schematic: Dark iron rifle (requires Engineering 276)
Schematic: World enlarger (requires Engineering 1 & Gnomish engineer)
Schematic: Alarm-o-bot (requires Engineering 265 & Gnomish engineer)
Again, Jaruce is trained up to 296/300 at the Vanilla level, so these schematics should be learnable for him. The last two also require Gnomish Engineer, but Jaruce is trained as a Gnomish engineer and has been trained in all the other standard Gnomish recipes. It’s just these newly-acquired drops that he can’t learn.
As I said, I have another engineer at the same level (Batumi) trained up to 300/300 at the Vanilla level, and he was able to learn a second copy of the first schematic (Dark iron rifle) without any problem.
There was also another Vanilla schematic looted from Blackrock Depths that Jaruce wasn’t able to learn and that I passed along to Batumi: Mithril heavy-bore rifle (requires Engineering 220). Jaruce couldn’t learn it; Batumi could.
Both engineers are trained up to the top of the Vanilla level as described above, and have also just started on Outland and Cata recipes.
