Okay, after talking to some other Demon Hunter mains who have told me that I haven’t been playing the class wrong, I have learned that Blizzard has screwed up their scaling in leveling zones.
I am a level 30 Demon Hunter who is leveling in the Eastern Barrens zone (because why not) and is supposed to be a low level zone. I am actually supposed to be in higher zones in the game.
How come the enemies in this zone is dealing enough damage to KILL me when I pull one or two at a time? WITH buffs and cooldowns? They have the same health scale as other enemies for my level, BUT they are dealing MONSTER damage that just chunk my health away within SECONDS!
Is anyone else sharing the same issue as me?
No? Just me? Cool.
Alright, so, I did go through the whole new leveling experience with a warrior, and have been trying it out with other classes, albeit at a slower pace. I don’t think the scaling is bad - EXP wise, it is the best it’s been in a while, I admit -, but I do think it is punitive, and I also think that some specs are a bit too low in world performance.
For example, playing with protection warrior, even though it is a bit of a piano, rewards you with near immortality in leveling content against countless foes. Meanwhile, pulling two, three mobs as Arms/Fury, even though it is not a death sentence outright, is levels below the Prot performance in sustain and sometimes even in DPS.
My complaint is related more to how this will affect new players diving in. I think new players gravitate towards DPS due to it “suggesting” less responsibility, and right now, arms and fury are a bit… poo poo in the scaling department. Likewise, the difference in performance between the early level mage specs is like night and day, but I admit I still do not have all talents and skills at my disposal to judge it with conviction.
I think people that have been exploring the new leveling experience can give better input than me but… Here are my 2 cents for the time being.

That’s good thing. Mobs shouldn’t act like critters

This ain’t Classic. This is retail. The scaling of these mobs are way off and I am sure I am not the only one dealing with it.

They nerfed demon hunters way too hard, that doesn’t help things.

My Shadow priest isn’t having any problems so far with the new leveling
Enemies don’t do that much damage. My lvl 20 druid can solo a world boss with 12x as much HP as she has. The problem is that DH were massively overnerfed into the ground in prepatch. They are a dead class at the moment.
What zone are you in that has world bosses for your level 20 to solo?
Are you dying because you’re watching Netflix on the other monitor?
Like, I’ve been leveling a mage, warrior, paladin, and warlock since the pre-patch of various levels and I just murder multiples at a time.
My primary complaint has been the insane lack of teeth and resistance mobs have with the scaling, making it extremely boring.

If you’re soloing Legion world bosses on a leveling character, the scaling is very off.
Scaling is funky all over. Plenty of Legion dungeon mechanics straight up one shot leveling characters.
Scalling used to be a joke with those with full Heirloom, and zone scaling even made it easier.
There’s a spot in the Blood Elf starting zone that’s invested with yellow mobs, as a warlock all you gotta do is tab dot them and voila.
Now As one who levels 20+ toons to max levels manually I don’t see the need to punish levelers, it’s jsut a chore we understood we must undergo. Let’s just leave it at that. No point making the leveling experience anymore painful for the sake of it.
New players will have their own hurdles (no mount, no gold, no know how, no heirloom, no open map etc) while the veterans have probably done it hundreds of times they don’t need to be reminded of how hard it is. It’s not and it’s not meant to be.

I’m targeting zones where there are demons, using Purified Shard of the Third Moon trinket that gives a double shield against demons with a 1 min CD, makes them easier to handle. It is somewhat unfortunate it caps out at level 44 with full heirloom upgrade, hope they fix that soon.
I mean, I’ve done a fair amount of leveling myself since the pre-patch. Haven’t really run into any issues yet aside from dungeons. Some dungeon bosses seem to be over tuned and could use some tweaking. But other than that things seem fine.
I’m leveling a Spriest through Legion content and so far I just melt everything, I’d say it’s actually too easy. No heirlooms either.

I thought leveling has been a breeze. I went thru vanilla zones like STV and Tanaris as a monk with heirlooms and found it all to be quite easy.

I am currently level 40, leveling at Maestra’s Post, killing Furblog Avengers and Shamans. When I pull an Avenger, their melee damage doesn’t kill me instantly. I can kill them one at a time with near full health. (No less than 80%.) When I attack a Shaman, when they summon their totems, the usual 100-150 DTPS turns into 600+ DTPS. Their totem’s searing spells deal MASSIVE damage in one single hit. Even killing the totem after the first strike is enough to drop me at critical health. When popping cooldowns both before and after attacking (I tested both) the buffs are still not enough to sustain a full battle.
If you are right by saying that Demon Hunters are over-nerfed and that damage scaling is way off, then I guess I am gonna have to level a different class.
If this is a consequence to the level squish and the item level scaling, then I hope that Blizzard fixes this issue soon.
Enemies seem fine to me on my mage.
they kinda made the gap between dps and tank too broad(hp, survivability), so unless your itemlevel is far above what’s intended, you are going to struggle unless you respec tank. It’s not a big deal at lower levels but at higher levels you REALLY get punished for being a dps with lower ilvl than intended.
