I feel that 70% of the time I’m d/e epics, I get bronze quality crystals even at the profession almost maxed out - yet I feel that if I actually vendor those items is better either for just make money/buy better quality crystals to use.
Maybe I’m missing something? 
Edit: For consideration, I’ve also maxed that branch of the disenchanting tree, and I’m still not feeling a big difference in the quantity of good crystals I get from d/e. Maybe I"ll use the respec goblin to take those points out and put somewhere better.

The whole disenchanting tab is a disappointment tbh. Putting ranks in the chanting mats was just asinine in the first place. Then again there was no ranking in DF, but there were +skill nodes scattered all over the tabs. These days I mostly DE on maintenance days and buy chanting mats the rest of the time.
I am very close to being done with KPs in chanting but doing it again, that tab would be the last I’d be filling for how useless it is.

So, from purely a financial standpoint, is better to just vendor the purple items and buy those crystals as you need?

Well I do not get showered in epics all week long to be honest, so I bank em to be used on maintenance day. It does not produce enough for my needs, and certainly not at the quality I need, the rest of the week, so I end up buying what I need.

While the purple crystals are pretty cheap on the AH, I think you’d still come out ahead most times by disenchanting them.
My enchanting tree is complete and I still get the rank 1 mats. That’s intentional.
Also I don’t mind this. The rank 1 stuff is for things that either I don’t care about the outcome or have no rank. I actually burn through those faster than the rank 3.
I disenchant items all the time. I try to keep at least 1000 dust, 200 blue crystals, and 10 or so people crystals on me at all times. The dust is the thing I run out of more than the purple crystals. I can always just make purple items whenever I want by making Darkmoon cards, but Delves are keeping me fairly well supplied so I haven’t needed to do that in awhile.
On my server, at least, each poor quality crystal sells for 10-15 while selling the epic item can net from 70 to 120g if it’s a 2h weapon… That’s my dilemma lol, just because the math won’t score.
I wish we could refine a number of crystals to increase the quality or something.

Since these are reagents these items are region wide, not server wide. (Rule of thumb: if it can be stacked it is a region-wide AH item, otherwise it is server-wide).
I hadn’t realized that R1s had dipped that low. I do not sell refulgent crystals so it’s not on my list of items I pay attention to. My apologies, you are correct. With the current probabilities, it would be better to sell your epics.
