Enchanting vs Alchemy : Usefulness and potential for profit?

Playing a priest. Originally I wanted to go herb/alchemy since it’s a profession that I’ve had since BC, and I miss the watered down aspect that used to be the powerhouse known as alchemy.

That being said… there are so many people going herb/alchemey (both in my guild and outside) that I feel like the market is going to be so over-saturdated it will be nearly impossible to both farm effectivly and make an effective profit. Maybe I’m just unusually pessimistic?

As a result… I started to think about potentially running enchanting/tailoring instead. Only 1-2 other enchanter’s in my guild and most people I’ve talked to are avoiding it because “it’s a money sink”. This makes me think there could be good money to be made… if I can capitalize on the scarcity of enchanting.

Wanted community input before I make a final decision. If I do go the enchanting route I plan on dropping tailoring for herbalism once I get the epic plans crafted.

I honestly find alchemy to be a bit overated, as far as moneymaking goes… all LOT of people choose alchemy, it’s definitely more of a buyers market imo…

Just take into account how busy its going to be, and remember the nodes aren’t shared in classic.

As for my personal opinion? tailoring and enchanting. bolts of cloth and enchanted mats sell really well, and you don’t have to level it very fast to make a profit. Just my two cents lol

Enchanting was an incredibly long process for me in vanilla. But people will need enchants the entire xpac including the inevitable twink brackets.

Especially since you can make wands which will be a massive money maker at the start.

With alchemy you can make pretty consistant money even with just the trainer skills. With enchanting a lot of the valuable enchants are very rare, stuff like crusader will be hard to find early on.

If you get lucky and get it quickly, you will make a LOT of money off it. If you are not, and you don’t get it until after everyone else already has it, the profit won’t really be there anymore. Same for blacksmithing.

One big thing about alchemy is the arcanite transmute. Everyone only gets one a day, and arcanite bars are needed for a lot of high end patterns. The bar will be worth more than the mats, so that is free money every day. You can also just sell the cooldown to people that have the mats.

These have valuable CDs. Enchanting has higher potential for money making, but it is a pain.

Alchemy is just great for ensuring that you have your own consumables covered. Both can be great moneymakers though.

I don’t think there will be as many alchemists as you might think. Most folks I predict will in fact be going engineering for those self-buffs and extra options. Those guys will need both alchemists and enchanters providing for them.

Skip the Alch, run Herb and Enchant. Deny the Alch their herbs and the tanks their blues. Then sell them the herbs you took and enchant their greens so they can get into some groups.

TBH I recall trade chat being full of people looking for both.

How long will and enchant last? How long will the effects of a potion last?

Potions you can sell on the AH. Enchants you have to spam trade.

I actually thought about that: But wasn’t sure if not having the ability to craft greens or the boa epic at max level would hurt too much

Another thing to consider is that at launch, making wands will be very lucrative, even at low levels.

I remember using my wand to finish off mobs, decent dps. Whoosh. whoosh.

Yes. Thats a moot point because it’s obvious lol

Another aspect of Tailoring is being able to make bags to sell or use for yourself and friends and that…remember we only get 1 16 slot bag…and drop rate of small pouches is not the best…I played last stress test and had a mage tailor…I literally was making bags almost the whole weekend the last stress test was up…

Not obvious if you haven’t been around before they put the parchment stuff in the game.

Mine rich thorium veins to get Arcane Crystal, sell it to an alchemist. Alchemist transmutes it into an Arcane Bar, sells it to a Blacksmith. Blacksmith forges it into an Arcanite Rod, sells it to an enchanter. Enchanter pays for everyone’s time.

Until the enchanter gets Crusader or Spellpower and charges out the wazoo for it at least.

Enchanting is a cruel mistress to level. I tried it in vanilla and I never maxed it out. It might be easier if you had a friend or two feeding you some greens/blues or at least selling them to you for vendor price. I never got Crusader.
