Molten Core is the FIRST “classic” raid, and after all the changes, classic is now levels 1 through 50.
I farm the hammer off Magmadar called Earthshaker because I had it from the original Raid 19 years ago. I had farmed 2 of them way back then and those hammers in my inventory after all the changes and squishes are ilvl 27.
If you go do molten core right now they drop at ilvl 97, and is not enchantable from any classic enchants because those are capped at ilvl 50.
this is the issue, plain and simple. Ilvl needs to be set so you can enchant all the gear from the expansion the enchants are for.
yes i wish they would fix this. been an issue for a while now. also make crafting gear from older expansions not crap would also be nice. (like, not requiring a relic of the past to be a useful item level at the character level the item is intended for)
You need to mail the heirloom + the enchant to an alt under level 17 and have themn enchant it for you. Leg and shoulder enchants are 100% broken now though…
“Must not be applied to items above ilvl 50 (lvl 17)”
“Must be level 30 to use this item!”
(and no you can’t have a lvl 30 alt/enchanter do it for your character on a second account. I tried that)
Pretty sure even the old heirlooms with the enchant would not work anymore with all the changes, but they ALL work above the maximum iLVL they can be applied if you apply them to a low level heirloom.
Yes I have mailed enchants (for the ones that work as stated above) to low level for heirlooms… BUT… A: no heirloom boots… B: do you know how many cool dungeon weapons and gear there are that are more powerful than heirlooms for several levels that would be great to enchant and ACTUALLY USE while leveling as natural progression intended … Plus think of all the newbies with no heirlooms.
… and ALL previous xpacs (including classic) except BFA are the same “ilvl tuned” because BFA is 50 - 60.
I posted about this last year when I returned to the game after a long break and my lvl 45 toons had Ilvl 45 gear (Fel Invasion) but I couldn’t even kill a same level boar because they require ilvl 90 to be inline with the mobs and drop ilvl 90 gear…
I actually still have a couple toons with that gear, let me change toons and post on one you can see for yourself.
Depending on the source, some old gear was updated and some was not. Legion normal dungeon gear at level 45 is ilvl 137. World quests still give ilvl 50 gear. I see changes gradually happening. Occasionally you see a dungeon quest that offers mythic ilvl gear, but also some that are ilvl 50. Both relinquished and dauntless gear are still ilvl 50.
Old gear scaling appears to be a work in progress, but one that is not going to be completed for several expansions, at this rate.

That is correct. But some items scaled properly, and with other items my best guess is that a new item number was created, leaving old gear of the same type unscaled with recent changes.

That’s how heirlooms are now. Dungeon gear is even higher. Old gear sometimes got rescaled down inexplicably.
It changes from expansion to expansion now. People who don’t level much and don’t have old characters in mothballs can be entirely unaware of the present status of leveling gear.

are they from standard “classic” content?
…or did you get them in Chromie time, from another expansion, with an “upgraded item” bonus?
i have a level 17 toon, wearing a couple of ilvl44 items which are now inactive because they were changed to require level 21 and level 22.
It’s not just Enchants. All crafted gear is scaled incorrectly as well and has been since Dragonflight launched. I assume it’s just a low priority fix but legacy professions outside of gathering or crafting solely for transmog are useless. They provide no benefit to the player.
