I’m interesting in playing retro games, specifically Ps1 games, on my Pc.
1.) Is the ePSXe recommended for Ps1?
2.) How do I prevent getting malware/viruses from downloading the client and games?
3.) Also, is it possible to play these games on the pc with a PS controller???
I’d recommend retroarch with beetle core, epsxe is decent but its accuracy leaves a lot to be desired, and beetle has the ability to overclock, correct the polygon jitter typical of the psx (PGXP perspectve correct texturing and subpixel precision) and also has vulkan compatibility for better performance.
A core is the meat of an emulator, Retroarch is basically a downloader and interface with which to run these cores, instead of downloading mednafen, you download retroarch and inside retroarch you download mednafen’s core which is called beetle.
I’d like to take a moment to appreciate the irony in this post. Cites ePSXe’s lack of accuracy as an issue, then recommends an emulator based in part on its inaccuracy (the PSX hardware had no subpixel support nor perspective correction).
Now that the moment has passed, ePSXe using Pete’s (P.E.o.Ps) plugins is more than adequate enough, and fast enough for most people (it’s been full speed emulation since sub-1GHz processors). I’ve not encountered any problems with it myself, but my collection isn’t exactly huge. It also supports overclocking now, which is the source of an interesting bug (if you don’t tell it to run at least at 1x, it crashes on launching a game).
I am curious to try Beetle now, though. I like me some enhanced emulation when it’s done well (HQ2x, the various CRT filters, etc, are not typically well done).
DS3 and DS4 controllers (I recommend the latter) are natively DirectInput compatible, with tools available to map them to XInput. Just plug them in via USB or sync them via BlueTooth. Adaptors also exist to plug in older controllers via a USB port, including the NegCon, for a more authentic experience.
