Embarrassing DPS

I’m a bad shadow priest. As in, I’m lucky if I beat the tank. I’m newly returned and learning the dungeons so I’m sure my uptime isn’t the best, but not that much.

When I read up on icy veins, it seems that Legacy of the Void might be better burst for dungeons but I was hoping to level in the same play style I’ll hopefully raid in. But everything goes so fast now, mobs are dead before I’ve even dotted. (I’m at level 118, holding off on turning 120 till I figure out what I’m doing wrong.)

I researched a simpler pew-pew, point & shoot-type character but, at one time, I healed (though it’s been years). I was hoping I could stay with my priest, learn the dungeons as dps, then try healing again. Any ideas for dps help? Or should I just switch to a different class?

If you’re wanting to priest, you should play what you enjoy. While scaling during leveling can be a little messed up, priest isn’t as tied to Voidform as was in Legion.

LotV helps with more consistent flow of dipping in/out of form, while Lingering Insanity further helps in that frequency.

Shadow Word: Void is a nice little talent that rectified issues with cooldowns closing while in Voidform.

I personally love using Misery, and just applying to a few mobs in a dungeon pack, but Dark Void is extremely strong and would possibly best running with. This may not be optimal, but I prefer not to be dictated by dotting many low level mobs. Though easier levels of dungeons will always be disastrous for Shadow.

Stock with it if you’re keen on the overall class :+1::+1:

The priest it is then! If I have some low damage numbers - and as long as no one is kicking me out of a dungeon - I’ll just keep practicing. Thanks for the boost.

All good mate.
Again, the ramp can be brutal for mobs which don’t live long. So the usual gameplay can be very, very hard to execute when stuff is dying quickly.

Look up guides for shadow talents and azerite traits. It’s also a spec that will feel a bit meh until you get 18% crit and way more haste. Once you get there it’s awesome and a lot of fun. Good luck!

Legacy of the void is currently our go to talent for every situation, including raids. For dungeons I recommend using dark void and shadow crash until u get ~18% crit then switch to AS.

I wouldn’t worry too much about your dungeon dmg while leveling. Shadow doesn’t have a lot of upfront burst like most melee and tanks have. So you’ll fall behind on the short lived packs. It’s just not shadows strength. We’re also pretty reliant on having good azerite traits. Our dmg shines in high fortified keys, raids, and bgs.

Just keep researching and practicing. I recommend visiting the warcraftpriests website and using the Warcraft priests discord for any shadow questions.

I had the same feels when I dinged 120 and was getting out classed on the charts consistently. Spriests have ramp up. Faster the pull dies, lower your numbers. When you start doing harder content and the packs don’t drop instantly you’ll see much larger numbers.

Once you get 3x Shadowy Apparitions and a couple chorus of insanity you’ll see a big jump in numbers. Pretty sure you wanna focus ~22% haste and then force feed crit into your build. I was out dpsing a 409 monk on trash in normal BOD when he was popping CDs (guildie was competing with me lol) because it was a huge pull. Larger the pull, larger our numbers.

Single target we do lag behind, though. We are turrets and movement really hinders us, plus we’re more cleave than single target.

When I was lower gearscore I had abysmal numbers but it’s finally catching up, hang in there!

Also if you don’t know about raidbots and simcraft. Look into it, it’s really helped me to optimize some things!

I hadn’t even thought about azerite powers and the like. (They were a bit confusing to come back to.). I’ll read up on the guides, thanks.
