Embarrassing: Balance levels faster in cat form

Ebbnflow did a nice analysis of kill time for various druid specs at level 40. In 10 minutes:

Feral - 27 kills
Balance - 19 kills
Balance Hybrid - 22 kills
Resto Hybrid - 22 kills

A “hybrid” is when a resto or balance druid switches to cat form to continue killing instead of stopping to drink (letting his mana regen in cat form).

It turns out that a balance druid, in balance gear, kills mobs faster in cat form than in moonkin form. Let that sink in for a moment. That’s how bad balance is for leveling.

You’d think that, but there seems to be a sizable contingent of players who are convinced that balance does good dps.

There’s some here but a lot on the classic wow subreddit. I think some people have been bamboozled by PS raiding videos.

So you’re saying that increasing up time increases efficiency? No way!

Im near positive nobody took oomkin serious, in any way, pve or pvp.

Gotta be one of the worst trees in Classic.

That said? #nochanges

I don’t readit. I just hang out here in blizz’s house cause I think this is like our classic pub.

I think Blizzard envisioned them as a melee/caster type of deal but nobody else did.

With proper consumeables, flasks, buffs, weapon oils, bis gear, and enchants, raiding moonkins can certainly do average dps on any fight lasting no more than 90 seconds.

Like a true hybrid. Melee and magic like tank mages in UO.

This is true. Just takes that extra effort everyone around here carries on about. A cool guild helps though. Pugging moonkins may find it rough though.
Play whatcha want to play. Find a cool guild and pwn on.

Allegedly it was actually pretty good for PvP when geared… I can’t confirm that from 1st or even 2nd hand experience however, as my server had zero boomkins of note.

Like many hybrids they had a near inability to get decent gear from raiding because the spec performed so poorly in pve… which in turn directly impacted how many you saw in pvp, and the average gear level (and with how important gear was back then, how strong the average player of a given spec appeared in general).

The fact there isnt really any “balance” gear at that point it doesnt surprise me. At that point all youd have is +int and + spirit gear which might cut down on wait time but doesnt speed anything up.

On a related note, here’s a Vanilla video giving a good rundown of the power of moonkin form in pvp:

As Ogimirak said, balance druids have certainly pulled their weight in damage in raids with enough effort. They were also very versatile and fairly viable in pvp if I’m not mistaken.

Hurricane is better in balance gear!

Reddit also thinks people are genuinely breaking into Area 51 in two months. Not exactly the brain trust.

Raises hand, I didn’t know that.

I mean I had heard that balance wasn’t good, I had no idea that even as balance spec you did better dps in cat form.

Boomkins with correct spec/toys never lose a 1vs1 though.

Y’all gon get surprised by the skilled ones.
