ElvUI or base UI and why?

I have the “base version of ElvUI”. What does that mean? I haven’t updated it in like a year…and every time there is a new update or something, for WoW, I turn ElvUI on.
It automatically goes in and puts its default settings on things like player names, my chat box…like, go make a new character, and turn on just ElvUI and you will see what I mean.
I like what it does to the chat box and it definitely increases how legible names are up-close and far-away.
And it changes some of the fonts. Just super tiny lil changes.
Then I turn ElvUI off and the changes stay.

I absolutely hate ElvUI. I think its too much. However, the “bare minimum” of small changes it does is just enough to make me use it for a solid 3 seconds to make a few permanent changes.

Other than that, I use Bartender because even the new default UI is crap. I have never liked the default UI for WoW because it never let me move bars.
Even know we have to kick and scream to get them to let us move the little “Dragon Eye Dungeon Finder” icon that used to be on the minimap.
A solid 13 years of me playing, and that icon has ALWAYS been in the same spot. Suddenly you want it to be in the middle of my the mini-interface to be annoying?
And then bartender can’t move it, elv ui can’t move it (even after finally updating it because too many changes in a year lol) and even the Edit Mode supplied to us wont let me move it properly. It just leaves it floating about 3 inches away from my minimap.
Scares me sometimes, makes me think there is a warlock watching me or something lol.

People have been asking for a fix for a while now, but uh…other things seem to be coming up lol.

Base with bartender/tiptac/plater

I like more individual addons rather than a suite because I can at least turn off one component or use the alpha version to get builds to more rapidly fix issues. Like with plater when we had fated affix with chaotic motes that chunked fps (even without plates up and without addons running). I was able to get dev fixes like 2 weeks before it was pushed to stable.

Base but I use Blizz HUD tweak or something like that to hide all of my bars and then just use WA to track my abilities

Hands down.

The UI we have now.
I use farmhud now instead of a small list of others UI addons because theyve make changes that made it so I could remove those addons.
Nothing finer than loving an addon, then after a patch realizing the author decide to retire and now you get no more updates.
Screw that.
I want to be as reliant on the game alone as possible.

Base ui.

Elv ui always has issues on patch days. I also used to pvp seriously and you weren’t allowed to use addons. Back in the day.

Base because when a patch drops I want to play that day without messing around with it for an hour.

See, I only disagree with people when they bring up Weak Auras.
Training Wheels, at best. Training Wheels.
I will make an exception for Paladins. They have about 100 different spells to manage with all their hands and buffs and heals and bubbles…its a lot. Anybody who says otherwise is just not a paladin lol. I remember back when I joined at the end of BC, hearing horror stories about Molten Core, having to stop between packs so paladins could rebuff people.
Obviously that’s not true anymore, but they still have a vast plethora of skills that they will be using if they play correctly.

Outside of paladins, nobody needs Weak Auras for anything other than training wheels.
I’ve seen the full extent of what it can do. Obviously, and I shouldn’t have to clarify this, I know that Weak Auras does other stuff. I used to use it to keep track of my previous actions. Literally just an action tracker. Didn’t show me what skill to use next or anything wild like that. I also recognize that a few too many people keep using for far more than that. They use it to basically be one step away from botting.
I saw one dude who used it to make a literal wheel of skills that rotates in order of usage for the perfect rotation. Watched him just wail away on a boss, standing in fire, ignoring every mechanic just to do the perfect rotation to parse…
I wanted to kind of display both extremes of that. You can have WeakAuras be something basic and simple, or you can h ave it basically play the game for you.
I will never advocate that it be taken away, but I also silently judge pretty much everybody using it.

Now Details has that, so I just have Details, Bartender, Gathermate to not waste my time in low density areas lol, and Healbot because the default healing methods are…well bad words. I never liked it. I know healbot isn’t much different, but it’s different enough to make me usually disable the default raid/group frame.
And, after getting caught during Mythic Archimonde in WoD…now I use DBM, though half the time I just turn it off. Honestly, I only needed help on Razageth, only to find out it wasn’t me messing up, people are just dumb and can’t put puddles on the edge so everybody dies. Most mechanics are just recycled because you can really only make so many unique attacks lol. It would be unfair to everybody on both sides to get upset about reused mechanics, but it is my point…the mechanics are recycled. I just know what skills are and can just immediately react appropriately 95% of the time without error.
The other 5% is from the “oh this debuff looks just like the other debuff but you are supposed to run it IN to the group, not out.” and then the next debuff on the same boss is just “oh, no run that one out not in…”

i don’t mess with elvui on patch days. I download the update, be it an dev build or actual update that usually is out with the patch or withing an hour after, and go on with my bad self. same way I have since…TBC

You clearly haven’t played mage or warlock.

I don’t know what weak auras you are referring to as “training wheels”. On almost every toon i play i have a WA package that displays all my much-needed info in a clear concise central area in my ui. It makes it so im can focus on what im doing without having to look at buff/debuffs, ability CD’s, timers, etc. And I don’t know any weak aura’s that “play the game for you or are a step away for being a bot”. People always make that claim but in 17 years I’ve played this game I have never come across a single weak aura that does that.

There was one in sepulcher that Blizz destroyed because it automatically showed which players had the “among us” buff

The base UI improvements are a step in the right direction, but ElvUi just does WAY more.

There are still things the Base UI does NOT do well, like getting your action bars resized and close together. I just wasn’t able to duplcate what ElvUI can do with bars with the Base UI. It just doesn’t do the job well enough.

I did 20s on my warlock in SL and didn’t need a weakaura for anything other than mechanics lmao.

That’s because Destro is super easy to play.

I’m talking about affliction and demo

Sl Destro was also pretty broken so 20s as Destro spamming rof didn’t take weakauras

I play demo lmao.
Have for 11 years now.
To also respond to your edit: I don’t play destro hardly ever.
Demo or die

Then you’re either not playing it correctly or were looking at your buffs instead of the screen

Or just lying

I used Elvui from Cata-SL then went to Base Ui when Elvui was broken at launch and I kind of have to say for most stuff yeah you can come close to setting up the base ui near to what Elvui does .

Maybe you can’t resize all the name plates or cast bars like elvui but that is minor stuff.

That didn’t automate your play tho. You still had to attack the target and do the mechanics of the fight. I also used that weak aura and without it that fight was nearly impossible to do. Marking a target =/= automation of play which is what people claim weak auras do.

Its more than “minor stuff”. Yes you can resize stuff but that’s hardly the extent of Elvui. You can add more action bars than the base ui allows. You can change every aspect of the way buffs/debuff are displayed. The chat options far exceed anything you can do in the base ui. You can add data bars that give you options and info the base ui cannot. You can add custom panels to show just about anything you want them to. You can change the font on every element in your UI and adjust the size and scaling. You can make a lot of adjustments to the minimap and worldmap that you cannot in the base ui. You can reskin every element of the ui including the action bar buttons. You can adjust what information tool tips display and where it is anchored. You can add an event tracker to your map that tells you when a world event starts or how long until its over (ie soup event, the seige, even the new time rifts). You can adjust the way it displays your quest log, auto turn in quests, auto sell grey items at a vendor. You can add announcements to chat for interrupts, taunts & threat changes, battle rez. You can automate resetting an instance when you zone out. It can auto insert your key when in a mythic+. And that just scratesh the surface.
