ELVUI not being updated for Midnight

Looking at the WoWHead comments about this..And my word, the amount of vitriol there…

You have also let me know that you aren’t worth discussing the topic with because you have nothing to base your opinions on. You don’t use Elvui. You don’t use addons. You clearly do not have an understanding of what any of the various people in this thread are trying to tell you and keep falling back to “Well MysticalOS said X in his video and I interpret that in this way” based on what he said and without any hands on knowledge myself" Blizzard has made small concessions to their approach based on feedback from players and addon devs, but as of yet it is not enough to drastically change the trajectory they are on or give any clear indication that they are willing to be more open with the community. Blizzard has a very poor track record with this stuff and myself and other are simply not willing to wait and see if this all pans out in a positive way especially when we could realistically be seeing the pre-patch drop late December or early January. Thats an amazingly short time frame to get this right and its alarming considering Ion said a lot of these changes were only recently solidified in the development cycle of Midnight.

I feel like angry and conspiratory are not really the issue here. I’m passionate about my hobbies; apologies if it comes across as like, actual anger lol. At the end of the day it’s video game changes, so whatever happens, it’s not exactly the end of the world, haha. Unlike Mr Reactionary in that other thread around women lmao.

I also don’t think it’s a conspiracy to believe these are corporate backed changes. For what, I’m not sure - I don’t know if I actually believe the console gamer changes - but they don’t seem dev based given what we’ve heard.

Tone can be rough over text! And if you’re a more positively inclined person than I, it explains a lot of our different stances ^^.

I get that and feel the same. But if Blizzard messes this up, that’s their fault, and not your fault or the community’s fault for not screaming loudly enough at them.

I am a chef, if I mess up someone’s meal, that’s my fault, and not their fault that they weren’t in the kitchen watching me cook their meal for them and giving me all kinds of feedback while I do so. And it sucks, now I’ve ruined their evening and that feels bad, but there’s nothing that they could have done as the customer to have avoided that.

Sometimes you just gotta let people cook.

I would agree, but I go back to editmode and lack of updates to that since DF.

If they want to take the place of addons, that would have been a great place to start, at least as a show of good faith that they ARE trying.

Unless they find the millions of untapped people they might think exist by way of console, you are 100% right. Right now, for me anyway, I am not preordering, and I might end up quitting finally after 17 years depending on how things fall. .

And I still don’t get why this is even happening. I would take a $5 sub increase over this.

Good faith that they’re trying is the fact they’ve already made several large updates based on feedback to the alpha

Yet a major UI addon like Elvui is discontinuing development until further notice due to the restrictions.

This is not good faith especially when it’s literally just a ui addon.

It’s happening because they finally got sick of designing every trash pack, every encounter, around the existence of addons

It’s not literally just a ui addon, if it where they’d be happy with just being the coat of paint blizzard wants them to be

But they want access to things that blizzard doesn’t want them to

They have opened a can of worms that they really shouldn’t have opened. It’s going to kill the game unless they very quickly do a 180 on this.

Game will be fine, better even

This tells me you don’t know anything about elvui… And even worse, it’s in the name.

Yea like your own health bar.

I’ve never seen someone cope so hard.

Yea, I don’t subscribe to that opinion, and if you look at all the things they are doing, that’s not the only reason. If they didn’t design things like they did, people would naturally need and want less addons. They could have easily just done that and let people’s addons stay there with nothing to do.

Saying the game will be better is laughable. Look what they are doing with Frost Mage and Frostbolt and Glacial Spike. Tell me how that makes the game better.

You will lose EVERYTHING in Midnight, and be happy - Blizzard. The game is going to be a Mobile game level of complexity with the narrative of Bluey.

Well thats just a flat out lie. I doubt ANY addon author could just get in. How does that even work? Where does an addon dev even request access to alpha? Can i just write a LUA code that puts a yellow line across my name and call it an addon, and get instant invite to alpha?

If so, i’ve been doing this wrong the whole time!

I can understand the disappointment, but we all really could have seen this coming. Blizz is not directly gutting specific addons to ruin our QoL. They are gutting combat data reading capability (some stuff imo is still to strict, health/mana/resource values/etc). The problem is that QoL and “customization” addons use the same data that the combat addons are using.

Whether they’ve done it well or not, they have expressed the ability and willingness to develop new features in the API to assist in customization without giving data to the addons (see ability to change color of health bar based on how much is left, but the addon still doesn’t know what that number is).

When addon authors give up and say they are done giving feedback, that is what will guarantee the addon is dead. Its still possible that any and all feedback they give won’t result in the addon working the way they want it, but they could still try,

And IMHO, this whole “unpaid labor” argument is weak. They’ve been doing unpaid labor to develop and update the addon for years. They aren’t doing labor for Blizz to fix Blizz UI, the feedback and alpha testing is to work on keeping their addon working.

All this said, I do believe that S1 of Midnight could be an absolute disaster. I want to be able to play the game with base UI personally, but the nameplates and damage meters they made are not there yet. Lots more work needed.

Cause you could compute off that, they don’t want it

It’s not cope it’s being realistic, the game will be worlds better without all this

Also, I used elvui for years, it is not just ui, it hooks it I a lot of things

No, there is never a good reason for someone to freak out over something as trivial as a silly video game. Children do that, not mature, rational people.

I like that change with frost mage and glacial spike, not everything needs a separate button
