Elven guild ranks

I’m looking to assign some guild ranks for my guild (Quel’alann), and wanted some feedback.

So far I have:

Leader (because I’m not a huge fan of self-appointing myself as a General, figured Leader is generic enough).

Champion (this would be the special/veteran sort of rank a member could earn over time and dedication).

Magister/Magistrix (Mages)

Honored (this would be the regular member rank, we honor their status in the guild so call them Honored)

Initiate (new person who hasn’t fully joined yet)

Since my guild is Sin/Quel’dorei themed, would it make sense to have a priest/priestess rank as well? I think maybe the other classes could all fall under Honored and Champion, as Magister/Magistrix and Priest/Priestess are already distinguished roles. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Since you’ve got a specific mage rank I’d suggest adding one for the other “major” classes of Quel’thalas. Blood Knights and Farstriders, for instance. Farstriders/Rangers in particular are very important to High Elves and Blood Elves alike.

It depends on what exactly your rank system is meant to reflect.

If your guild, as an IC organization, has a structure and roles that are specific to it, then your ranks can reflect those roles. Are priests as a character role important to the way your guild operates?

If the ranks are meant to reflect the roles and archetypes of broader Thalassian society, then a priest/cleric rank isn’t a bad idea. But in that case, as Faltherin said, there are multiple other archetypes that aren’t yet being included here. Rangers and Blood Knights are particularly prominent, but there are more you could consider.

The ranks Champion, Honored, and Initiate seem to suggest that guild-specific structure is important, but then there’s the Magister rank that doesn’t really fit in with them and more seems to suggest a focus on societal positions outside the guild. You could certainly meld both together, though, if you wanted.

That’s a good point. I may meld them together as I’m a paladin, but not a blood knight. There may be rangers who aren’t Farstriders. The Honored/Champion ranks could be used by those members, and those who want to use the Farstrider/Blood Knight ranks could do that if that’s what they want too. Thanks for the input!

‘Leader’ as a GM title/rank feels kind of boneless ngl. I can understand not wanting to giving yourself some kind of grandiose title like General but you can probably make due with dropping down the ladder a few notches and going from there.

Having been in a few Belf focused militia guilds before myself I always found that it was easier to keep ranks standard all the way down and not specifically make ranks for what official group they’d fall under. Just sort them into those groups IC. Mages and locks together for Magisters, Rangers, warriors and rogues as Farstriders. Then let the actual guild rank define who can influence who.

No worries!

You make a good point about the Farstrider thing. Most Rangers are Farstriders but you’re right that the Farstriders are the “Blood Elf” Rangers. Ranger might work best as a rank on it’s own, as most High Elves kept the title “Ranger” not “Farstrider.”

Void Elves like me are Umbral Rangers now :sunglasses:

I like ranger as a guild rank, and then the character can define themselves as Farstrider in their trp if they choose to.

As for Leader, yeah it is a little lackluster. I’ll have to think on that one. Silver Covenant had Ranger-Captain. Maybe since I’m a paladin I can look at other paladins who had leadership roles and go from there.

you could be knight-captain or something

just knight-[rank] is a good one to grab

Yeah a lot of Blood Knights use the Knight-Lord title. Or simply Lord or Lady.

If you’re going for a High Elf leader rank though, keep in mind that the High Elves didn’t officially have an order of Paladins - they were pretty rare and most of them learned from the humans of Lordaeron. The Blood Knights were only founded after the Scourge’s invasion. So maybe it wouldn’t make sense for Alunasari to use a Horde Blood Knight rank? Maybe you could use a more human paladiny rank, like Highlord or Highlady. Or even just a generic noble one, like Lady.

Highlord/Highlady does seem like a fairly common title for the leader of a paladin or paladin-adjacent group. Knight-Captain would work if you’d prefer a less grand version. Knight-Lord, I think, comes across as pretty Blood Knight specific, and within the Blood Knights it’s very high ranking.

If something less paladin-esque would fit the guild better, then things like Commander, Keeper, or plain Captain could work, depending on the tone you’re going for.

Just faction change to Alliance and give 7th legion military ranks. Or use ones Sylvanas used in Quel’Thalas military.

So right now I have it as:

Knight-Captain (Leader)
Lieutenant (Officer)
Champion (Distinguished veteran)
Honored (Veteran)
Oathsworn (Member)
Initiate (New person)

Love it! :grinning:

I saw this page, thanks for the recommendation. I based my ranks loosely on a combination of Blood Knights and Farstriders. It’s vague enough so that any class can be the ranks I made, I think.

As a note, the Magister one is all messed up. It’s Apprentice > Arcanist > Magister. Inquisitor seems like a fan thing, so be careful of such as there are different types of Inquisitor type of RPers as there is no official title for such. But the BKs and Farstrider seem legit. Just don’t get mixed up in server fanon from another server.

But that aside, I like the ranks you posted recently so those should suffice! Another paladin-esque title could be Templar if you want to add magic to it, which would make sense as high elves are still attuned to arcane.
