I was there for Vanilla WoW launch. I leveled the content. I raided. I pushed progression. I PvP’d for High Warlord.
Then,
I was there for BC launch. I leveled the content. I raided. I pushed progression. I PvP’d for Gladiator.
Then,
I rinsed and repeated through all the expansions of what is now deemed “retail”.
My point? I’ve noticed a toxicity from some of the most experienced players that was completely and utterly nonexistent in Vanilla. The obvious factor is well, the last 15 years of experience gathering and what is now in essence a simple rerelease of content.
We get it. You’ve done it. You know your sh!t… You’re a Mack daddy pump OG suave gangsta, but, how about learning to relax and enjoy a game that many, if not most, are enjoying for the first time. There is a ton of immersion that is being missed because the toxic elites are pushing around less experienced players.
Just check yourself that’s all. Let’s make it fun for 10 million again, not just the 250,000 try-hands that won’t stick with it after the initial grind anyway.
My $0.02. It probably cost you $10.50 to read this. Thanks. Comment below.
Um… I don’t know what you exp was but back in the day those same types of people were doing the same thing, acting high and mighty, entitled and like the rest of the server should worship them.
I’m not sure if you’re really talking about EJ here or just some similar progression folks but the toilet has always been dirty in respect of folks thinking they’re better than casuals, at least that’s how it was on EVERY PvP server I ever played with even a remotely active raid progression calendar.
Did I say players weren’t toxic in Vanilla, or did you merely skim the post, get the gist of it, and pretend you knew what I stated? There is no dillusion in acknowledging the changes from 15 years ago.
The community is just currently a bit more toxic than it was in 2005 and my perspective is that many of the current toxics are just players who’ve stuck with the title forever and know the content, but they forget when they didn’t know the content, like a rich person getting detached from society and what it’s like for those lower…
Let’s not take away from the awesome communities that were created.
If you all can’t understand that… Blizzard delete my post now because we have some remedial forum goers.
Honestly, I’m sure you DO feel that way, but my experience so far is that there is FAR less real toxicity issues in the relaunch than there were when I first picked up the game.
No one’s denying the idea that Classic WoW has toxic players, but the notion that Vanilla NEVER was toxic is so absurd it actually woke me up.
I played Vanilla. I remember Vanilla. Vanilla had plenty of great, kind communities. Vanilla was also a cesspool, and it was especially a cesspool whenever you got to the top-tier ranking players.
Drama was a huge facet of Vanilla, for better or worse. People grinded so hard for rank 14 in PvP. It generally made people toxic no matter what. Vanilla’s setup breeded toxicity. Guildmates griefed other guildmates because in 40 man raids, you were bound to play with people you didn’t like. That’s just how Vanilla was. Anything other hot take that might insinuate it wasn’t, is just straight wrong.
This is true. I guess the difference imo was the timing. Vanilla was slow over time as the game gained traction and players leveled up and separated themselves from casual and hardcore whereas now it’s immediate upon rerelease.
Vanilla had it’s share of “those people.” Many of the “top ranking” players had a false sense of accomplishment. AFKing in AV all day does not make someone a good player but it did give some of those people an inflated ego.
I will take the community then to what we have now in retail.
