Elemental Shaman?

Hi.

Why do my abilities do legit 65% more damage in Restoration Spec compared to Elemental?

I do more than double the dps in resto than I do in Elemental.

??? What??

I aint saying youre right…but i aint saying youre wrong. lol.
I can always get far better damage with Restoration than the other two specs. I spose Im playing them wrong or something.

At low levels this is likely the case at times.

Restoration does not have as many talents/passives/mastery which contribute to damage scaling, so to give them appropriate damage where they focus balance at level cap, it needs higher base damage.

Best way to approach this from their balancing PoV as a player: as a DPS, none of your passives and such are actually benefits but instead what you need to reach your “normal” damage. Doesn’t sound fun, but it’s how it goes.

At level cap, Elemental as the DPS specialization will definitely outperform healing/tank specs on an even gear comparison.

Assuming you’re on that character, low level scaling makes no sense at times. It will make more sense at max level.

Shamans are still paying for that bus they summoned in the day. Clearly.

Yeah no damage you do in dungeons before DF content is real. It’s all fake numbers made up arbitrarily for reasons. Just enjoy the ride, it’ll normalize when you start DF content.

Kinda feels like they should fix this…

Thanks.

I hang back and eat a sandwich when I queue as dps in leveling content and the group has a resto shaman or mistweaver monk.

I mean I don’t but I’d might as well for all I contribute compared to spammed crane kick or chain lightning.

It’s mostly just that mobs in dungeons don’t have enough HP for low level characters compared to higher level ones.

A pretty easy fix would be to buff leveling dungeon mob HP by 150% at level 10, scaling down to 0% by level 40-50 or so.

Aha there you are, I have a position opened for your shaman to cast rainfall my garrison garden cause that’s what you are good for for what I heard.

I can’t remember the last time elemental shaman didn’t feel underwhelming compared to all the other caster DPS in the game.

It definitely doesn’t work that way at higher levels. I deal much more damage as elemental even in my crappy gear and don’t have to waste my resources on healing.

I’ve mained an Ele Shaman since Cataclysm and I don’t understand this sentiment. I’ve played a decent amount of Balance Druid, Shadow Priest, Frost Mage, Destro/Affl Warlock and BM hunter during Dragonflight, and I don’t feel like it’s any less than most of those. I mean some of the other rDPS specs in the game are just miserable or boring.

Lightning build ele feels awesome.

This is a weird fallacy I see very often about ele.

It wasn’t just decent but excelled and a meta spec at certain points during BFA due to funneling power. And yes, it was as short lived as many other specs that reach situations such as this, because the players have apparently signed up for popcorn tuning. Not enough players push back against the “it’s time for x spec to have its moment” for change to happen (to me it makes no sense from an RPG perspective).

At many other times it wasn’t only middle of the pack, but just above middle of the pack. But middle of the pack/just above it, doesn’t usually cut it. Players have always played it at the higher end, even if not highest, regardless. For alts or for fun to mess around.

The specs that truly run into the most issues of temporary abandonment are pure DPS class specs. They’ll have outlier(s) and a spec that’s deemed, “dead” for the tier/tiers. For no logical reasoning. DPS specs of hybrids have historically received more aggressive band-aid tuning.

I’m going to vote this as the culprit.

I played Elemental in BFA and it felt really awkward not being able to spread Flame Shock and relying on most of m y damage to come from a giant red meatball which was pretty RNG reliant on Lava Surge procs. The spamming Lightning Bolt filler felt kinda crappy.

Admittedly I don’t do high end raiding, I don’t do mythic+ either, but I’ve never felt at any point like my damage isn’t adequate for the content I’m doing. There are times in five man content that I’m the lowest of the three DPS, and I’ve noticed that those other DPS are usually better geared than I am. There are also times in 5 man content where I’m the top DPS, so it all evens out. Most of the time in large content (raids, world bosses, etc), I see myself anywhere from 3rd to 7th in the DPS charts, and if I’m any lower than 7th, it’s not by much damage overall.

Yeah, the challenge the devs face with balance is maintaining it while hiding it from the player. Fire mage is the spec that always makes me need to take time away from WoW. Nothing like playing a spec thats all bells and whistles and big booming instant fire and then looking at the meter and realizing “oh, right, this is normal. this is just whats expected”. SIIIIIIGH walks away for a while
