Elemental Distress is horrid quest design

For those of you unfamiliar, Elemental Distress is a step in the shaman rune chain for Earth Shield. This quest requires you to clear Baron Aquanis in BFD, which means it cannot be (reasonably) started before level 25, and likely not until a bit of investment is made into rounding out one’s gear with good dungeon/quest drops.

That being said, why does this quest incorporate a 0.03% drop from a world mob? Stone Spirits in the Charred Vale are the only source for the seismic motes required for this quest, and per WoWHead’s stats of 2,997 kills, this item has dropped one (1) time from Furious Stone Spirits, a level 26-27 drops. Enraged Stone Spirits, a level 24-25 mob, don’t even have drop data; making it questionable as to whether they even drop the item.

Now, for comparison, in 2 hours of farming I have received ten (10) infernal motes from the fire elementals around the zone. I received them from all variants, which makes me hopeful the lower-level stone spirits do drop the item. The reason why I have received so many of these other motes, though, is that the elementals share a spawn table—why? I need to not only hope that I hit a 0.03% drop rate, I also need to clear out fire elementals each loop while trying to dodge the other hostile 25-28 mobs in the Vale. And, even better, I get to compete against other players for the tag—and can’t group up with other shamans trapped in this hell, because it’s a personal drop rather than shared quest item!

How is this defensible? This isn’t a quest made in Classic, and left unchanged for sake of ‘nostalgia’ (which would still be inexcusable for how smoothbrained and disrespectful this design is), but one made specifically for this rune. They could have set up drops how they pleased, and adjusted spawns as they wished; they did not. Instead of feeling like I’ve accomplished or discovered anything on my way to getting this rune, I instead feel like my balls have been squeezed in a vice (and will continue to be, because I still haven’t gotten the drop) as I continue to make loops around this uninteresting, burned-out environment for hours on end hoping that I not only get the right mob spawn rng, I get the right drop rng as well.

At least make the motes tradeable. I’d rather pay 50g for them than spend 12 hours in the charred vale running in circles between basilisks and harpies.

0.03% drop rate quest sounds very classic to me :expressionless:

Unfortunately, unlike hoofless zhevras and skulless humans, these elementals aren’t easily farmable. I wouldn’t care if they were like the water elementals also involved in this quest, who have their own lake in Ashenvale.

I feel your pain bro, Been farming it for 8 hours so far.

I wrapped it up at 4 hours with 18 fire motes to my 1 earth.
Then I went and farmed water elementals and got that in 20 minutes.
Really great stuff.

Killed about 20-30 earth ele’s over a period of hours. Spawn rate is abysmal, other shamans are trying to get it, not a shared drop, and drop rate is ridiculously low. This is bad even by true classic quest standards. Needs a hotfix.

The Wowhead droprate statistics for items like this are not accurate, because they include kills from people who are not on the quest. The droprate is too low I agree, but not as low as wowhead indicates.

I considered that after making the post (along with the fact that WoWhead reporting only works if you download their addon hook for it, which I personally don’t do myself), but I think it stands to be changed even so since the drop rate is, regardless, far too low. Shared drop or tradeable, I’d prefer the former over the latter but solutions are here if the devs care to take them.
Given the state of numerous other introductions in this season, though, I don’t expect that they do care.

Blizz pls, this quest is absolute misery.

I am now experiencing this misery. It is driving me nuts. Why is it so ridiculous? I think the thing that makes it so frustrating is the sheer low number of spawns, combined with the abysmal drop rate, that leads to hours to trying to get the drop for the stone spirits. There is 0 fun to be had here, just misery.

It isn’t even grinding, if I could grind some mobs at least, sure, but the low spawns and large area to cover looking for them just makes this quest absolutely ridiculous.

I don’t understand that after 6 hours of being in the vale i can walk away with nothing, how is this quest still here in this state? does blizzard not play shamans?

its averaging kills for people without the quest too, so it cannot drop for them.

Blizz please make these mobs more plentiful. There are none for the 5 shamans always running around the zone to kill.
